This Black History Month has the sad distinction of marking 50 years
since the unjust assassination of Malcolm X. Join us as we celebrate a
life dedicated to resisting oppression and honour his enduring legacy
with a celebration event at Heartwood Community Cafe on February 21st,
and a film screening and discussion at UBC on February 10th.

These events are taking place on the traditional, unceded, and
occupied ancestral territories of the Tsleil-Waututh, Musqueam,
Squamish, and Sto:lo peoples.

Sponsored by Colour Connected Against Racism (UBC) and organized by
various members of Colour Connected, Vancouver Critical Muslims, West
Coast Sheen, and No One Is Illegal.

ABOUT MALCOLM X

Born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1925, Malcolm X came to be a leader in the
struggle for civil rights in the United States. He went on to travel
widely, converted to Islam, and adopted the name El-Hajj Malik
El-Shabazz. He became a symbol of uncompromising resistance against
all kinds of oppression, but especially against racial and colonial
violence. Even 50 years after his death he continues to be a source of
radical inspiration to subjugated peoples around the world.

ACCESSIBILITY

Heartwood Community Cafe has 2 gender neutral Bathrooms at the back of
the cafe. At this point unfortunately they are not wheelchair
accessible. However they have made an agreement with the neighbouring
Starbucks, which allows Heartwood patrons to use their wheelchair and
scooter accessible restrooms (although not guaranteed to be scent
free). We ask that folks help us maintain a scent-reduced environment
by not wearing fragrances or scents to this event.

We will have on-site childcare available but if possible please email
ayanacalana72 at gmail.com to arrange ahead of time. There is more
information for accessibility at Heartwood here:
