Stopwar, Vancouver's broad anti-war coalition, came together in late 2002
to oppose the war on Iraq. Our first large march and rally against war
with Iraq took place on November 17, 2002, and drew a crowd of 10,000. Our
largest demonstration took place February 15, 2003, when at least 40,000
people marched in Vancouver against war on Iraq. Our other most notable
march and rally was in March 2004, when 20,000 people came out to hear
Noam Chomsky speak to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the war in
Iraq.
In 2006, Stopwar shifted our focus to opposing Canada's combat role in the
war in Afghanistan, and in 2010, began opposing the Canadian government's
military spending, most notably the F-35 fighter jet program. In 2011,
Stopwar signed on to the the Peace & Propsperity, Not War & Austerity
campaign of the Canadian Peace Alliance.
Stopwar has participated in many community events over the years, including:
Canada Day
The Dragon Boat Festival
May Day
Under The Volcano
The Vancouver Pride Parade and Festival
