Wee<http://apartheidweek.org/>
k <http://apartheidweek.org/>. IAW seeks to draw attention to the nature of
Israel as an apartheid system and its protracted occupation of Palestine.
We have 3 events over the next few weeks on the UBC campus!
We hope to see you soon!
In solidarity,
SPHR-UBC Executive
SPHR-UBC <https://www.facebook.com/pages/SPHR-UBC/190741272305> is hosting
Israeli Apartheid Week from the 27th of February to the 2nd of March. 2
events that we would like to draw your attention to are occuring on
Wednesday and Friday next week.
*Film Screening: Salt of this Sea*
We are hosting a screening of award winning film, Salt of this
Sea<https://www.facebook.com/SaltofthisSea> (Cannes
Official Selection, Un Certain Regard). It is about a refugee returning to
claim her grandparent's effects left from the Nakba, which expelled over
700 000 Palestinans in 1948. Through the eyes of the protagonist, we
confront the Occupation firsthand. As one reviewer has said,
"Salt of This Sea compels us to make a choice between the cold comfort of
indifference or the knowledge that we can make a difference."

University, Seattle, organizing committee member of USACBI and founding
member of Arab women's activist groups. She will be giving a talk on
solutions to the Occupation: the academic and cultural boycott of Israeli
institutions which benefit from the Occupation. As a diaspora Palestinian
feminist, it will be an opportunity to hear of gendered perspectives of the
Occupation and apartheid in Israel.

*A Child's View from Gaza: Children's Conflict Art Exhibit*
SPHR-UBC is pleased to partner with the Boycott Israeli Apartheid Campaign
(BIAC) <http://www.boycottisraeliapartheid.org> who has coordinated the
exhibit in Vancouver. The show is an exhibition of 25 children’s art
pieces, which are part of the 75-piece exhibition that was created in 2009
by the children of Gaza who witnessed the destruction of Operation Cast
Lead and who participated in after-school children’s therapy programs.
“Cast Lead,” Israel’s December 2008/January 2009 attack on a virtually
unarmed Gaza, killed 1400 Palestinians, including 320 children.
These images are powerful. Children have no agendas. Their art work is an
incredible testament to the lasting trauma suffered from the Assault on
Gaza.
The exhibition will begin in Vancouver on Friday, March 9 and we encourage
all IAW participants and supporters of Palestine to attend. Guest speaker
Barbara Lubin, Founder and Executive Director of the Middle East Children’s
Alliance<http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.258212907546434.67287.145021988865527&type=3>,
is a life-long peace, justice and disability rights activist. The
collection comes to UBC on March 15. For more details about the
exhibition’s visit to Vancouver and a preview of images, see
childsviewfromgaza.org.
