Outreach & Media Coordinator                                                   
JOB POSTING
(Part-time, temporary replacement position – 12 months) 
28 hours/week (hours may decrease to 25 in April 2012)		Wage rate: $25.15/hr with benefits	
This is a unionized position with CUPE.				Starting date: Week of June 24, 2011

The Simon Fraser Public Interest Research Group [SFPIRG] is a student-based social justice resource centre located at Simon Fraser University [SFU] in Burnaby, BC. SFPIRG is focused on providing skills training, learning opportunities and resources to students on a wide range of social and environmental justice issues. 

This position is one of three part-time core staff that manages the day-to-day work of SFPIRG.  Responsibilities include coordinating and overseeing all SFPIRG outreach, media and public relations, while working collectively with staff and the board of directors to manage the organization.  The position is responsible for promoting SFPIRG on campus, coordinating outreach materials and organizing events and coalition projects. The position involves extensive work with volunteers, the SFPIRG board, temporary staff and students. Applicants must be able to multi-task, work efficiently in a busy environment and provide a strong leadership role in mentoring, organizing and running SFPIRG’s outreach and media and the organization as a whole. An emphasis on process is key, meaning that applicants must value collective work within an anti-oppression framework.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Outreach Work: 
•	Organize outreach and coordinate volunteers  for SFPIRG programming: orientations, open houses, clubs days, workshops, speakers and sponsorships of other groups’ events
•	Coordinate classroom outreach for SFPIRG and its Action Research eXchange (ARX) program, including promoting SFPIRG resources to students and faculty ; scheduling and training volunteers; giving in-class presentations
•	Coordinate media outreach for SFPIRG’s Annual General Meeting,  Board of Directors candidate recruitment and elections promotion 
•	Coordinate the volunteer social, rotunda parties and other events 
•	Build and maintain relationships with campus-based organizations and coordinate and represent SFPIRG in on-campus coalitions 
•	Recruit/hire, train and supervise student outreach staff and volunteers
•	Manage requests for event sponsorship and endorsements 

Media Work:
•	Design posters, leaflets, booklets and other outreach materials; update signs, forms and print materials; coordinate printing and postering 
•	Provide trainings and ongoing support for students on Adobe Creative Suite 
•	Coordinate the content and maintenance of SFPIRG’s website and social media/online presence 
•	Act as key spokesperson in representing SFPIRG on campus and in the community, including writing responses to media coverage of SFPIRG and responding to general e-mail inquiries 
•	Coordinate and disseminate the SFPIRG Digest

Organizational and Collective Duties
•	Work with the other staff to manage SFPIRG: staff and maintain the office; respond to requests from students and the public; participate in SFPIRG organizational initiatives and events.
•	Contribute to ongoing organizational development of SFPIRG including strategic planning, union collective agreements, hiring, and staff collective development and communication.
•	Work with the staff collective to determine and prioritise the goals for each semester and to delegate the day-to-day management of the organization.
•	Committee work to implement organizational goals.

Skills and Experience Required: 
•	Education and/or work experience doing communications and outreach in a non-profit or grassroots community setting 
•	Good working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (Indesign, Photoshop, Illustrator)
•	Basic graphic design skills a must, excellent proficiency in graphic design an asset
•	Excellent computer and technical skills
•	Event coordination experience: visioning, planning, coordinating, working with volunteers, working with other organizations
•	Experience and interest in consensus decision making and working collaboratively in collectives
•	In-depth experience in coordinating campaigns, building and maintaining coalitions, and social activism
•	Commitment to social and environmental justice and experience with grassroots organizing toward social change, with a strong anti-oppression analysis and practice
•	Excellent communication skills: clear written and verbal communication, public speaking, networking, conflict resolution, facilitation, collaborative working style, ability to dialogue with diverse parties, ability to openly give and accept feedback
•	Interest and experience working in a mentorship capacity with young adults
•	Experience coordinating volunteers including recruitment, training, delegation and appreciation. 
•	Ability to work efficiently in busy, people-filled, self-directed environment. 
•	Extremely organized with excellent time-management skills.
•	Solid computer skills (word processing, e-mail, internet, database). 
•	A sense of humor.
