Gasland : The Documentary

What is fracking ?
Oil and gas companies are injecting millions of litres of freshwater laced with thousands of kilograms of toxic chemicals and sand beneath the ground. Their goal is to extract natural gas. This is currently happening in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and New Brunswick, and there are plans to establish the practice in Quebec and Nova Scotia. At risk are ground and surface water, human animal health. This film shows how fracking takes place in North America, and the catastrophic consequences for people and the environment. Gasland deals with this issue in the United States, but the same basic process is happening in many areas of northern BC.

UPCOMING...

Sunday April 3: Sunday de-Skool

SCHOOLING THE WORLD: THE WHITE MAN’S LAST BURDEN... “takes a challenging, sometimes funny, ultimately deeply troubling look at the role played by modern education in the destruction of the world’s last sustainable indigenous cultures... it questions our very definitions of wealth and poverty – and of knowledge and ignorance.”

Sunday May 8: Social Medicine

HEALTH FOR SALE... “asks: are the world's largest drug companies, paradoxically, major obstacles to making a healthier world? World health is too precious to be treated as just another commodity. Health for Sale, through a close examination of one essential industry, calls into question whether global markets and corporations can be trusted to serve the interests of a majority of the earth's population.”

Sunday June 5: Feeding Mind and Body

Travel to the streets of Los Angeles, where FOOD NOT LAWNS combats the lack of healthy, affordable food and growing hunger in urban working class communities of colour. Then travel to West Oakland, where THE PEOPLE’S GROCERY works toward creating a food system that prioritizes the needs of the urban poor.” Finally, travel to Cuba, where SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE ... “creates the largest program in sustainable agriculture ever undertaken.”

LAUNCH OF THE MOUNT PLEASANT FOOD JUSTICE PROJECT
Introducing the Mount Pleasant Food Justice Project

The Mount Pleasant Food Justice Project has three Objectives:
1. To raise awareness about how food insecurity hurts our physical and mental health and to fight for social change so that everyone has access to fresh, healthful food.
2. To make the places in our community that control our access to food – welfare offices, food banks and other charities, grocery stores, landlords, and minimum wage employers – accountable for their actions, and to advocate for changes that increase food security.
3. To find ways of meeting our own needs such as community kitchens, bulk buying, food preservation workshops, clothing exchanges, and community gardening.

If you live or work in Mount Pleasant, or use a service in this area, and you care about food justice, get involved in the campaign.

IMMEDIATE CALL TO ACTION - ASK LEADERSHIP CANDIDATES TO SUPPORT COSMETIC PESTICIDE BAN IN BC

Many communities in BC and elsewhere across Canada have banned the use of cosmetic pesticides. Three provinces have banned their sale as a result. With the upcoming leadership election, it is integral that all candidates state their support for province-wide legislation.

All BC New Democratic Party (NDP) candidates and two BC Liberal candidates, Christy Clark and Mike de Jong, have given their support for province-wide legislation. The public still needs to hear from Liberal candidates Kevin Falcon and George Abbott.

If you think BC should prohibit the sale and use of chemical pesticides for lawns, gardens, and non-agricultural landscaping please email, blog, Tweet or post a Facebook message about this issue, letting the public and BC Liberal candidates, Kevin Falcon and George Abbott know that:

§ BC needs strong, province-wide cosmetic pesticide legislation that prohibits the use, sale, and retail display of synthetic, chemical pesticides for lawns, gardens, and non-agricultural landscaping;
§ Cosmetic pesticides refer to pesticides used for aesthetic purposes – to make a lawn, landscaping, etc. look better. Such a ban is not intended to apply to pesticides necessary to protect public health or in agriculture.
§ Cosmetic pesticides expose members of the public, including children who are particularly vulnerable, to toxins and carcinogens in return for only aesthetic benefits. Methods of pest control that continue to use pesticides for cosmetic purposes fail to address this concern.

You can reach them by email at:

Kevin Falcon: info at kevinfalcon.com < mailto:info at kevinfalcon.com >
George Abbott: info at georgeabbottforbc.ca < mailto:info at georgeabbottforbc.ca >

Please share this email widely and ask your friends and family to join the fight!
