TELL THE SFU BOARD OF GOVERNORS TO PUT GOLDCORP BACK ON THE TABLE!
Thursday January 27, 3pm at SFU Vancouver

Say no to Goldcorp! Keep our education public and open!

How SFU can accept money from a corporation whose controversial mining projects
have allegedly carried out human rights violations and caused negative health
impacts on communities in both North American and the global south? Why does the
SFU Administration think it can make decisions for the Downtown Eastside
community? Why SFU is not demanding for funds to the provincial and federal
governments? Why is SFU not listening to our concerns?

For four months now we, SFU students, staff, faculty, and residents of the
Downtown Eastside communtiy have been asking that Goldcorp be put on the agenda.
We have worked with campus groups writing letters, giving talks, attending
meetings, publishing editorials, and filing motions. We have tried to work with
the University administration, but they have shut us down.

On January 27th, we are going to demand that the SFU administration put the
Goldcorp donation and SFU's handling of DTES funds on the table. We encourage
you to join us us in making the SFU Board of Governors accountable for their
actions and the impact of those actions on local and international communities.

Please sign on to our list of demands by January 27th, 2011 by emailing

Our Four Demands

1) That SFU remove Goldcorp’s name from all SFU buildings and projects

2) That SFU administration develop procedures to give low-income Downtown
Eastside (DTES) residents control over all SFU DTES campus developments. SFU
administration must not decide for DTES residents how to spend the $5 million
earmarked for DTES ‘development’ by Goldcorp. The use of this money must be
directed by DTES organizations with elected resident boards.

3) SFU must not accept funding from corporate human rights abusers like
Goldcorp. We demand that the current backroom process for seeking and accepting
private donations be replaced with a transparent and accountable policy to be
developed by SFU students and faculty and the SFU union community.

4) Finally, we recognize that the problems of corporate funding in the
university are generated by the erosion of public education by all levels of
government. We demand that SFU administration advocate to put the public back in
public education. And we demand full provincial and federal government funding
for public education.
