Dzaleka Project Refugee Camp Exhibition
Wed Jan 26th, 10:30 till 3:30
SFU Bby Campus, Convocation Mall (square infront of library)
SFPIRG's Action Group, The Dzaleka Project, invites you to join us in Refugee Camp Exhibition and BBQ Fundraiser to support refugees. We personally encourage you to come out and vouch for SFU’s motto “Thinking of the World”. There are about 62,000,000 refugees imprisoned in various camps worldwide, facing profound human rights violation and sufferings from hunger and insecurity. Let’s realize we can make a wonderful difference for people who have not been quite as lucky as ourselves.
AT OUR EVENT, THERE WILL BE:
• An interactive water carrying challenge
• A refugee housing instalment/demonstration
• Touching images of the daily realities endured by refugees sold as a memento
• Prizes can be won through our raffle draw
• A delicious BBQ meal (both veggie and meaty)
• Free coffee to keep you warm on this chilly January afternoon
• The positive vibes of our DJ Aous will set the mood for the day
Come and support a community initiative and learn about refugee rights and issues in Malawi and elsewhere! Joselyne, the President of this grass-roots project and a Student Refugee Program (WUSC) sponsored student at SFU, will be discussing her own experiences and those of her family, who this particular project aims to sponsor. All proceeds will be going to the Dzaleka Project. dzaleka at sfpirg.ca dzaleka.org

When Oil Meets Water: Living through oil spills

St. James Community Hall (3214 W 10th Ave, Vancouver)
Admission free. RSVP now for a chance to win a photo of BC¹s iconic North Coast!
Featured Speakers:

• Beth Wallace, National Wildlife Federation (Michigan -- Enbridges Kalamazoo River oil spill)
• Kyle Clifton, Gitga'at Nation (Hartley Bay, BC -- BC Ferries¹ Queen of the North)
• Welcome by MP Joyce Murray
Presentations followed by Q&A
Enbridge's Northern Gateway Pipeline project would stretch twin pipelines from Alberta to the BC coast and introduce more than 200 oil tankers a year to BC's fragile northern waters. The BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and Enbridge's own oil disaster in Michigan are painful reminders that oil is not safe on land or water.
Did you know that BC could be at risk of a major oil spill accident too? Come hear personal accounts from people impacted by spills from the Gulf of Mexico to Michigan, and find out how you can protect our coastline from similar tragedies.

You, Me and the SPP: Trading Democracy for Corporate Rule
Film Screening
Monday, January 17
Please join us for a screening of Paul Manly’s documentary which exposes the corporate agenda that is currently undermining the democratic authority of the citizens of North America.
What do secrecy, police provocateurs, an assault on democracy and infringements on citizens’ rights have in common? The Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP). Following the shock of 9/11, right-wing political and business leaders have pushed the SPP agenda, claiming it is a way to keep trade flowing between the United States, Canada and Mexico. You, Me and the SPP reveals that this secretive agreement is about much more than trade. The film features interviews with Naomi Klein, Maude Barlow, Murray Dobbin and Joel Bakan, among a host of other opponents of the SPP including economists, lawyers, union leaders and politicians.
Please join filmmaker Paul Manly for a question and answer session after the film.
Monday, January 17
7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Central Library, 350 W. Georgia St.
Held in the Alice MacKay Room, Lower Level
Free admission. Seating is limited.
Co-Sponsored by Cinema Politica & Vancouver Public Library

Islamophobia: Implications for Global Health
Jan 20 & 21
Join us for a dialogue on how Muslim identity and the current social and political context in which it is shaped affects the health of Muslims living in Canada.
The perceived ‘clash’ between ‘Islam’ and the ‘West’ post 9/11 creates anxieties. Even at the university, one may find a portrayal of “Islam” and “Muslim” within the context of conflict and violence. This form of othering contributes directly to the marginalization and isolation of Muslims living in the West. This community collaborative dialogue provides an intellectual and respectful space to explore Islamophobia as it pertains social justice, security and sustainability. The project will approach the underlying issues of Islamophobia through a series of short talks that address art as resistance, gender and race as they affect the lives of Muslims, and a dialogue session to explore the implications of Islamophobia on global health.
