GREEN CITY KITCHEN TABLE DISCUSSIONS
Fellow Students -
This semester, the Students at the Centre for Dialogue are helping to facilitate small group "Kitchen Table Discussions" about the City of Vancouver's "Greenest City 2020" Initiative, which is in progress right now!
This is a brief (1 hour or so) roundtable discussion - super informal and about 10 people.
We are just interested in your completely honest and natural opinions and ideas - no need to be an expert on the subject. The city will actually be looking at the comments, complaints and criticisms that arise, so your voice will be heard no matter what you have to say about the topic, procedure or anything else that arises.
Tuesday Feb 8 at 6:30pm.
Room 3050 on the third floor of Harbour Centre, 515 West Hastings St, Vancouver
Snacks and pop will abound!
Participants may want to have a quick look at the website:
http://talkgreenvancouver.ca/
And this point in particular:
http://talkgreenvancouver.ca/goals/lighter-footprint
Please RSVP to jessicao at sfu.ca as this event has limited space and is really exciting to be a part of!

FILM SCREENING. PREMIERE OF "STRENGTH, SURVIVAL, SISTERHOOD"
Wednesday February 9th, Doors at 6pm, Screening at 6:30 pm.
Vivo Media Arts Centre (1965 Main Street).
Open to all, free event.
Join us for a film premiere of the short documentary "Strength, Survival, Sisterhood: Power of Women in the Downtown Eastside", screening of award-winning feature "Finding Dawn", and presentations by women residents of the Downtown Eastside.
"Strength, Survival, Sisterhood: Power of Women in the Downtown Eastside",
a short film that documents the 20 year history of the annual women's memorial march in Vancouver, Coast Salish Territories. By focusing on the voices of women who live, love, and work in the Downtown Eastside this film debunks the sensationalism surrounding a neighbourhood deeply misunderstood and celebrates the complex and diverse realites of women organizing for justice. By Alejandro Zuluaga and Harsha Walia, based on concept and direction by the DTES Power of Women Group. This is a not-for-profit production that is available for free distribution under creative commons license.
Followed by "Finding Dawn" . An award-winning compelling documentary that puts a human face to the tragedy of missing and murdered Aboriginal women. This is an epic journey into the dark heart of Native women’s experience in Canada. From Vancouver’s skid row, where more than 60 women are missing, we travel to the “Highway of Tears” in northern British Columbia, and onward to Saskatoon, where the murders and disappearances of Native women remain unresolved. Along the road to honour those who have passed, we uncover reason for hope as communities to come together to demand change. (2006, Directed by Christine Welsh)

BUDRUS
BUDRUS is a hopeful film about a village in the Occupied Palestinian Territories and the nonviolent movement to save it, led by residents Ayed Morrar and his 15-year-old daughter. United in this goal are Palestinian political groups, including the feuding Fatah and Hamas, women empowered by Morrar's daughter, Iltezam, and hundreds of Israelis that Morrar welcomed to cross into Palestinian territory for the first time and join this nonviolent effort.
Cosponsored by Independent Jewish Voices and CanPalnet. Q & A will follow the film.
Sat Feb 12, 7:30pm
SOUNDTRACK FOR A REVOLUTION
Winner of the People's Choice Award at the Vancouver and Toronto International Film Festivals, Soundtrack for a Revolution is about the American civil rights movement and the freedom songs that empowered people to fight for their rights as they faced down brutal aggression with dignity and non-violence.
Preceded by MUSIC FOR PRUDENCE
Music by Prudence follows Zimbabwean Prudence Mabhena - a strong, resilient woman with a hauntingly beautiful voice, and a body debilitated with a condition called arthrogryposis. The film shows her remarkable transcendence from a world of hatred and superstition into one of music, love, and possibility.
Best Short Documentary: 2010 Academy Awards

SPEAKING UP FOR PALESTINIAN RIGHTS:
Understanding recent attempts to silence criticism of Israel in Canada
Free Public Forum
Saturday February 12, 6:30 pm (PLEASE NOTE TIME CHANGE)
SFU Harbour Centre
Featured Speakers:
Jenny Peto - Coalition Against Israeli Apartheid (Toronto)
Omar Chaaban - Solidarity with Palestinian Human Rights – UBC
Brian Campbell - Seriously Free Speech Committee
Over the past few months, two student organizations at UBC have come under attack for their efforts to oppose Israel’s illegal siege of the Gaza Strip. The situation at UBC began when the Social Justice Centre approved a donation for the Canadian Boat to Gaza at the request of the UBC chapter of Solidarity with Palestinian Human Rights (SPHR). The Canadian Boat is part of an international effort to break the illegal
siege on Gaza and expose the Canadian government's unjustified support for Israel. Since then, zionist groups on campus have engaged in a vicious campaign to both block this donation from being granted and to undermine the work of these student groups. This campaign is part of a wider strategy by pro-Israel groups in Canada to undermine solidarity work for Palestine.
Join us for a free public forum to discuss why these attacks on free speech are happening in the context of Palestine support work in Canada, and what we can do to stop them.
Sponsored by the SFU Teaching Support Staff Union Social Justice Committee
