Hi everyone,
La Bicyclette Rouge, a collective house in Commercial Drive, has summer
sublets available - if you know good people looking in Vancouver, please
feel free to pass this on...
-we like the house to be open to events and visitors - how many and how
often are set by the comfort level of house members. The house has organized
gatherings, meetings, art parties, foodsharing with other houses, music
shows/poetry readings/film nights in the backyard, singing club in the
kitchen, camping and hiking trips, berry picking, billeting organizers from
out of town... and we also balance this desire for community with a
relaxing space where we feel at home.
the community:
-shared food (we eat organic/local meat, chicken, fish, greens and veggies,
and dairy)
-please note, the house is not vegetarian - we eat organic/local/biodynamic
meat regularly at collective meals
-gleaning, bartering, and buying in bulk as ways to make organics affordable
-antiracist, queer and trans positive, welcoming space
-share house dinner nights and shopping
-shared collective house resources and house events every once in a while
(harvesting & canning food for winter - playing music - potlucks - political
events, etc.)
-house meetings twice a month
-gardening
-mix of private space and shared space, quiet peaceful spaces and social
spaces :)
-natural cleaners, non-smoking/chemical scents, environmentally friendly
house
the house:
-gorgeous hardwood floors
-sunny bedrooms with big windows, cool shady living room & study downstairs,
sunny kitchen upstairs
-backyard with big trees and an outdoor covered sleeping
platform/performance stage
-back deck for eating outside and social space
-working fireplace in downstairs living room
-comfortable clawfoot soaker tub
-beautiful woodwork and antique windows
-old-fashioned cold-storage/canning storage area.
-shared utilities etc.
-small basement workshop area, with tools incl. table saw
-two bathrooms (one beautiful, one functional)
-laundry machines in the basement (and laundromat option around the corner)
-indoor bike storage
-we don't want a tv; we watch occasional entertainment on computahs, &
prefer to entertain ourselves w/music, art, meals, friends, etc.
It is in an amazing location in the heart of the Commercial Drive
neighborhood, near Britannia Community Centre.
The rooms available:
-one *very* large second-floor gorgeous double bedroom with beautiful
woodwork and enormous windows that look out to the green tree-filled
backyard.
This room is available for potential sublet any time after April 15, until
August, with possibility to extend. It's the nicest room in the house, with
dappled sunlight, hardwood floors and woodwork, high ceilings, etc. Ideal
for a couple to share. 750+ for the room, for one or two people.
-one large third-floor bedroom, the sunniest room in the house. to sublet
June - August. Also bright, high ceilings, hardwood floors, and furnished.
400+ (negotiable).
Subletters have a cook night and share house food just like regular
housemates - if you want to live collectively but want a short-term
committment, this is for you. :)
The people:
a scientist by training working on community-based sustainability
decision-making processes & wilderness/outdoors lover
a media literacy/English teacher, percussionist, & poet with a tendency
towards antiracism/migrant justice/anticapitalist organizing
a graduate student who studies free schools & democratic education. works in
youth-run, empowered spaces.
a musician who plays piano, ukelele and other instruments. also works in a
youth shelter.
former housemates who are honorary members, and
One shy black kitty named Echo who likes pats
we all care about good food from good sources, music, social justice, and
community
If you are interested in collective living (whatever that means to you) and
think La Bicyclette Rouge may be for you, please get in touch!
p.s. because we've been getting a high volume of emails for this ad,
apologies in advance if we don't respond to everyone.
