Criticize Israel - Go To Jail?
Thursday, September 23 rd
SFU BURNABY:
12:30pm
Maggie Benston Centre 2290
SFU HARBOUR CENTRE:
7:00pm
515 West Hastings
Free
Speaker: Michael Keefer, a University of Guelph professor
Should Canada criminalize criticism of Israel as antisemitic hate speech? Some Canadian parliamentarians think so. The Harper government recently gave $450,000 to support an international conference that brings together in Ottawa in November Zionist supporters from parliaments around the world. Their goal is to expand the definition of antisemitism to include criticism of Israel .
The Canadian Parliamentary Coalition to Combat Antisemitism (CPCCA) is the Canadian branch of this effort. It’s an informal coalition of MPs from the Conservative, Liberal and NDP that has been studying the growing threat of what they call a “new antisemitism .”
The CPCCA , which will release a report at the conference in Ottawa , is expected to recommend changes to the human rights legislation or hate laws that would make it illegal to criticize Israel .
Responding to this threat to free speech, Michael Keefer, a University of Guelph professor, has written an important book, Antisemitism Real and Imagined , that provides an in-depth investigation of the extent of antisemitism in Canada, the ideology of the “new antisemitism ,” and the role of the CPCCA as a mechanism to protect Israel .
In order to raise awareness of this threat, Dr. Keefer is beginning a western Canada tour in Vancouver .
Hear MICHAEL KEEFER, along with MICHEAL VONN, Policy Director for the BC Civil Liberties Association. The meeting is co-sponsored by SFPIRG, TSSU, Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW), and organized by the Seriously Free Speech Committee.

Sliding scale means you pay according to what you an afford with the understanding that if you can pay more do so if you cannot, no worries.Ultimately it's your choice what you pay- and that stays between yourself and the Coordinator.
If you need some assistance with that amount - let the Centre know. Included in this price are the instruction and a "Reducing the Risk" booklet of about 30 pages.
Wenlido is a self-defense technique created by women for women. It is designed not as method of attack, but as a way of building your own capacity to - without weapons-disengage and move as quickly as possible from someone (male or female) who has entered your physical space.

4th Annual Women’s Housing March
Saturday October 2nd, 2 pm
Starts outside Downtown Eastside Women Centre
(302 Columbia - corner of Cordova, just west of Main)
Join women in the Downtown Eastside Women Centre Power of Women Group in the 4th Annual March for Women's Housing and March Against Poverty! Everyone (including men) welcome!
We are marching for:
- Social Housing, Childcare, and Healthcare for all!
- No more Evictions and No more Condos in the Downtown Eastside!
- Stop Criminalizing the Poor!
The Power of Women Group is a group at the Downtown Eastside ( DTES)Women's Centre, located in the DTES of Vancouver (the poorest off-reserve postal code in Canada). We are a group of women from all walks of life who are either on social assistance, working poor, or homeless; but we are all living in extreme poverty. Our aim is to empower ourselves through our experiences and to raise awareness from our own perspectives about the social issues affecting the neighborhood.
Many of us are single mothers or have had our children apprehended due to poverty; most of us have chronic physical or mental health issues for example HIV and Hepatitis C; many have drug or alcohol addictions; and a majority have experienced and survived sexual violence and mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional abuse. For indigenous women, we are affected by a legacy of the effects of residential schools and a history of colonization and racism.

Local Food Plans: Lessons From Other Communities
Plus Dialogue on the Regional Food System Strategy in Metro Vancouver
Tuesday, October 5, 2010
WoRk Centre for Dialogue, SFU Downtown, 580 West Hastings Street
Wednesday, October 6 2010 (repeat session of Tuesday),
Compass Point Inn Hotel, 9850 King George Highway
Speakers include: Sibella Kraus, President/Director, SAGE (Sustainable Agriculture Education), Berkeley, California; Dr. David McKeown , Medical Officer of Health for the City of Toronto; Judy Shiprack , Multomah County Commissioner, Portland, Oregon
Moderator: Peter Ladner , Fellow of the SFU Centre for Dialogue
Part of the Gaining Ground Conference: Eco-logical. The Power of Green Cities to Shape the Future
Concerns about food— its impacts on our health; its inaccessibility to many low income people; its vulnerability to climate change, soil erosion, water shortages and rising fuel prices; demand for local food; its role in creating new jobs; and the need for farmers to be able to make a decent living—have vaulted food strategies up the public policy priority list. Find out how Toronto, Portland and California are planning to transform local food production, distribution and land use.
In the second half of the afternoon, help shape Metro Vancouver’s Regional Food System Strategy. Over the past two years, representatives from all levels of government, the agriculture and food industry, community organizations and the public have provided valuable input on how to make our food system more sustainable, resilient and healthy. At this session, after a brief presentation on the draft Regional Food System Strategy for Metro Vancouver, participants will break into discussion groups and be asked for their feedback. The presentation on lessons learned from other communities from the previous session should provide food for thought for these discussions. Results will be used to refine the Strategy and clarify key areas for collaboration.

10/10/10 – Dig In For Climate Justice!
Mass Direct Action against Climate Crime
Sunday October 10, 2010 at 2:00 pm
Meet at Scott Road SkyTrain (East / Taxi Stand side) then march
to 129th St. and 115b Ave in North Surrey -- near Bridgeview Elementary
School (Map: http://bit.ly/bQzSHl )
Last October thousands of people marched in Vancouver as part of the largest ever coordinated global rally - 5,200 demonstrations in 181 countries demanding action on global warming. This year, it is time to do more than march. Now is the time for mass direct action against climate crime. Now is the time to help communities deal with increased flood risk and other dangers caused by global warming.
This year as part of the 350.org 10/10/10 Global Work Party (Oct 10, 2010), we will get to work stopping a deliberate climate crime –the South Fraser Perimeter 'Road' freeway which is part of the Gateway Program. The estimated $2 billion proposed freeway would greatly increase greenhouse gas emissions, pave over some of BC's best farmland, scar the delicate banks of the Fraser River, and pollute elementary school playgrounds.

Money-Driven Medicine: A Public Film Screening
Friday October 15 - 7:00 pm
Organizing Centre for Social and Economic Justice -
672 East Broadway (@ Fraser)
Money-Driven Medicine provides the essential introduction we need to understand the American health care system. Produced by Academy Award winner Alex Gibney (*Taxi to the Dark Side; Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room*) and inspired by Maggie Mahar's acclaimed book, *Money Driven Medicine: The Real Reason Health Care Costs So Much*, the film offers a behind-the-scenes look at how a $2.6 trillion a year health care system went so terribly wrong and what it will take to fix it.
The U.S. spends twice as much per person on health care as the average developed nation, 17.5% of GDP - yet outcomes, especially for chronic diseases, are very often worse. What makes the U.S. the exception? The U.S. is the only industrialized nation that has chosen to turn medicine into a largely unregulated, for-profit business.

Paddle For Wild Salmon
People from all walks of life who view salmon as an essential resource to this province and our way of life are pulling together to paddle down the Fraser River and join together with hundreds of others for a rally in Vancouver on October 25, the opening date of the Cohen inquiry.
The Cohen Inquiry is looking into the 18-year Fraser Sockeye productivity decline. As salmon farming appeared and spread throughout the Fraser sockeye migration route, the salmon runs have declined. For this and other reasons, salmon farming is major factor under consideration in this investigation.
Government typically appears unwilling to exert authority over salmon farms. Many salmon farms are operating on expired tenures and the same salmon farms are refusing government inspection of their fish. Government’s own studies reveal conflict of interest between DFO and the industry and salmon feedlots be removed from the ocean, but nothing is enforced.
To help the Cohen Commission truly evaluate the impact of salmon feedlot disease on Fraser sockeye we need a large assembly of all peoples to rally together outside of the inquiry to show the government that its citizens are concerned and demand truth.
The decline of salmon harms us, by infringing on our rights and food security. It starves the forests, whales, and bears of nutrients.
For more details, please Visit Salmonaresacred.org and check out the paddling section under "journey" Or RSVP to the Facebook event, titled "Paddle for Wild Salmon" Please let us know if you are interested in supporting the ‘Paddle for Wild Salmon’. More information is at www.salmonaresacred.org

There's a forum for sharing green ideas, and a whack of it should be all about food. They've asked us for food-focused ideas! So join the conversation and share your thoughts.
