Tickets: Regular Admission $15. $2 discount code (TAP001) {Online Purchase ONLY}

Trailer: http://bit.ly/cZJ5d

Is access to clean drinking water a basic human right, or a commodity that should be bought and sold like any other article of commerce? Stephanie Soechtig's debut feature TAPPED is an unflinching examination of the big business of bottled water.

>From the producers of Who Killed the Electric Car and I.O.U.S.A ., this timely documentary is a behind-the-scenes look into the unregulated and unseen world of an industry that aims to privatize and sell back the one resource that ought never to become a commodity: our water.

>From the plastic production to the ocean in which so many of these bottles end up, this inspiring documentary trails the path of the bottled water industry and the communities which were the unwitting chips on the table. A powerful portrait of the lives affected by the bottled water industry, this revelatory film features those caught at the intersection of big business and the public's right to water.

Vancouver City Councillor Tim Stevenson - Chair, Greater Vancouver Regional District Water Committee

MEXICO HUMAN RIGHTS, MILITARIZATION, AND THE WAR ON DRUGS

Militarization, War against Drug Trafficking and Human Rights in Mexico

A conference with professor and journalist, Carlos Fazio.

Tuesday October 19, 7:00pm

SFU Harbour Centre, 515 West Hastings St., Vancouver; Room 1900

Carlos Fazio is one of the most distinguished intellectuals in Latin America. As an international analyst he has received important awards for his knowledge in Latin American geopolitical affairs.

Based in Mexico City, he is a university professor, researcher academic and a journalist for several publications including the national newspaper La Jornada.

The conference will be presented in Spanish, with English translation.

Background:

This year, Mexicans are commemorating 200 hundred years of Independence. Is there something to celebrate? Mexico is experiencing the worst crisis of its existence. The current conditions are worse than those that led to the War of Independence, 200 hundred years ago, and those leading to the Mexican Revolution, a century ago.

The most serious problems are corruption, poverty, human rights abuses, and the so-called war against drug trafficking. More than 28, 000 people, mostly civilians, have died so far under the regime of Conservative Felipe Calderón.

Is this collateral damage? Who has benefited from this war? What are the objectives of militarization and the deterioration of respect for human rights? What is the role of mass media and Mexican politicians? These topics and more will be discussed in depth by distinguished professor and journalist Carlos Fazio, whose analysis will help us learn and understand what is happening now in Mexico.

Organized by Building Bridges Human Rights Project, with support from The New Noise

Sponsored by: BC Compassion Club Society, Council of Canadians, and SFPIRG

Sunday, Oct. 24, 2010, 7pm

Centre for Socialist Education, 706 Clark Drive, Vancouver

Donations will be accepted for the Canadian Boat for Gaza

Directed by Abdallah Omeish and Sufyan Omeish, 2006, 90 minutes

Occupation 101 is a powerful documentary on the current and historical root causes of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The film presents a comprehensive analysis of the facts surrounding the issues, and dispels many long-perceived myths and misconceptions. Occupation 101 also details life under Israeli military rule, the role of the United States, and the major obstacles that stand in the way of a lasting and viable peace. The roots of the conflict are examined by leading Middle East scholars, peace activists, journalists, religious leaders and humanitarian workers whose voices have often been suppressed in North American media outlets. The film covers a wide range of topics - the first wave of Jewish immigration from Europe in the 1880’s, the 1920 tensions, the 1948 war, the 1967 war, the first Intifada of 1987, the Oslo Peace Process, Settlement expansion, the second Intifada of 2000, the separation barrier and the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza - as well as heart-wrenching testimonials from victims of this tragedy.

COLLECTION FOR THE CANADIAN BOAT FOR GAZA! At the conclusion of the film, donations will be accepted for the Canadian Boat for Gaza project. This cross-Canada campaign aims to raise $300,000 to send a Canadian boat as part of the next international flotilla to break the Israeli siege of Gaza.
