SFU AGAINST GOLDCORP AND GENTRIFICATION (SAGG)
ORGANIZING MEETING
Friday October 8 th , 3pm
Graduate Students Society Conference Room
(Maggie Benson Centre Rm 2212)
Last Friday, more than 25 SFU students and faculty came to the first organizing meeting of a new campus group: SFU Against Goldcorp and Gentrification (SAGG). This ad hoc group began planning an ambitious campaign to fight against the corporatization of the university, the_community-washing_ of a mining company responsible for human rights and environmental crimes, and SFU's participation in the gentrification of the Downtown Eastside.
The four draft demands we agreed on (to be finalized this meeting) were:
i. To remove Goldcorp's name from all SFU projects
ii. That the university must develop procedures to give low income residents of the DTES control over university developments in their community
iii. No funding from corporate human rights abusers like Goldcorp. We demand control over private funding by students and faculty; and
iv. We demand the end of the private funding problem through full public funding of public education
The projects and actions we began work on include:
- An information and education campaign about Goldcorp
- A quick response public forum about Goldcorp's dirty-money funding of the SFU arts school, and the meaning of it for students and faculty and for the low income DTES community; and
- Outreaching other campus groups to gain support for the demands and actions of the SAGG campaign
Come to the meeting this Friday to continue this important organizing work and develop SFU's resistance against the corporatization of the university, Goldcorp, and gentrification...

RELEASE DETAINED TAMIL REFUGEES: LET THEM FREE, LET THEM STAY!
Saturday Oct 9 at 1:30 pm
Shuttles Leaving Edmonds station starting at 12:45 until 1:15
7900 Fraser Park Dr, Burnaby
Burnaby Youth Custody Services Centre where mothers and children who arrived aboard MV Sun Sea are being detained.
For the past five weeks we have gathered in front of the Burnaby Youth Custody prison where approximately 90 Tamil refugee mothers and children are being incarcerated. Supporters bang on pots and pans and blew whistles and horns to the beats of Tamil music. A large Tamil banner reading "We welcome you, we support you" is held towards the two detention units where children can be seen waving and smiling, peering through prison bars. (For photos, see here http://www.flickr.com/photos/nooneisillegal/ )
Join No One is Illegal-Vancouver at the Burnaby detention facility to continue to express our love, support, and solidarity with those still being held inside and to call for the immediate release of detained Tamil asylum seekers.
* Bring noise! We want to be visible and be heard from inside so please bring pots, pans, horns, drums, noisemakers (please be aware of noises which may be triggering or traumatizing)
* TRANSPORT:
Meet at Edmonds station for rides at 12:45. Last shuttle leaves at 1:15pm.
If you have a vehicle and can offer carpool, please contact us at noii-van at resist.ca or 778 885 0040
Surviving a dangerous journey, 492 Tamil refugees, including women and children, arrived in BC after fleeing war and persecution in Sri Lanka. When the ship first neared Esquimault, territories of the Songhees First Nation, it was immediately boarded by the Armed Forces, Border Services, and RCMP. The refugees are now in jails, facing endless hearings that have revealed the clear incompetency, deliberate negligence, and racism of the system.
In the context of the never-ending "War on Terror" refugees, migrants, and racialized people are increasingly being racially targeted, dehumanized as security threats, and criminalized through unprecedented police and state powers. Despite its rhetoric of 'liberating' and 'protecting' women globally and locally, the Canadian state is detaining an increasing numbers of women and children that cross these borders. In light of increasing repression and exclusionary policies and ideologies, we demand "Justice, Freedom, and Status for All!"

DIG IN FOR CLIMATE JUSTICE!
Mass Direct Action against Climate Crime
Sunday October 10, 2010 Meet at 2:00 p.m.
Scott Road, Skytrain Station (East, Taxi Stand Side) then march to 129th St. and 115b Ave in North Surrey – near Bridgeview Elementary School ( Map )
Join the 350.org 10/10/10 Global Work Party to stop global warming. In the Lower Mainland join the party and work to bag sand from the proposed South Fraser Freeway to raise the dykes protecting nearby communities.
This year as part of the 350.org 10/10/10 Global Work Party (Oct 10, 2010), we will get to work stopping a deliberate climate crime – the South Fraser Perimeter ‘Road’ freeway which is part of the Gateway Program. The estimated $2 billion proposed freeway would greatly increase greenhouse gas emissions, pave over some of BC’s best farmland, scar the delicate banks of the Fraser River, and pollute elementary school playgrounds.
Freeways = Climate Crime
What can I do right now? Go to www.350.org/dig-climate-justice and sign up to receive more information, including volunteer orientation and work party times.
The 10/10/10 Dig in for Climate Justice is a project of the Council of Canadians (Delta-Richmond, Vancouver-Burnaby, and Surrey-White Rock-Langley chapters), and GatewaySucks.org.

Real aid, true solidarity: An anti-war benefit evening for Afghanistan and Palestine featuring Malalai Joya

Malalai Joya was the youngest woman elected to Afghanistan's parliament in 2005, but was expelled from her position and has faced five assassination attempts because of her opposition to the warlords in the Karzai regime and her fearless advocacy of women's rights. She has emerged as one of the most prominent voices against NATO's war, with TIME magazine recently naming her as one of the 100 most influential people in the world.
With the Canadian government threatening to extend Canada's support of the occupation of Afghanistan beyond 2011, this special evening is an important chance to hear directly from an Afghan women's leader about the war.
In addition, your contributions will go towards bringing genuine aid to the people directly affected by Canadian foreign policy in both Afghanistan and Palestine. Money raised will be go to support two very worth causes:
-The Canadian Boat to Gaza, a civil society initiative to challenge the siege of Gaza and bring urgently needed humanitarian aid. (See http://canadaboatgaza.org/ )
-Malalai Joya's Defense Committee, which provides much needed financial support to a free medical clinic in Farah Province, and works to support other grassroots health and education projects throughout Afghanistan. (See http://malalaijoya.com/dcmj/ )

LEFT FILM NIGHT: "OCCUPATION 101: VOICES OF THE SILENCED MAJORITY"
Sunday, Oct. 24, 2010, 7pm
Centre for Socialist Education, 706 Clark Drive, Vancouver
Donations will be accepted for the Canadian Boat for Gaza
Directed by Abdallah Omeish and Sufyan Omeish, 2006, 90 minutes
Occupation 101 is a powerful documentary on the current and historical root causes of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The film presents a comprehensive analysis of the facts surrounding the issues, and dispels many long-perceived myths and misconceptions. Occupation 101 also details life under Israeli military rule, the role of the United States, and the major obstacles that stand in the way of a lasting and viable peace. The roots of the conflict are examined by leading Middle East scholars, peace activists, journalists, religious leaders and humanitarian workers whose voices have often been suppressed in North American media outlets. The film covers a wide range of topics - the first wave of Jewish immigration from Europe in the 1880’s, the 1920 tensions, the 1948 war, the 1967 war, the first Intifada of 1987, the Oslo Peace Process, Settlement expansion, the second Intifada of 2000, the separation barrier and the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza - as well as heart-wrenching testimonials from victims of this tragedy.
COLLECTION FOR THE CANADIAN BOAT FOR GAZA! At the conclusion of the film, donations will be accepted for the Canadian Boat for Gaza project. This cross-Canada campaign aims to raise $300,000 to send a Canadian boat as part of the next international flotilla to break the Israeli siege of Gaza. For more information, visit canadaboatgaza.org .
No charge for admission; donations welcome. Coffee and refreshments available. Left Film Nights are presented by the Centre for Socialist Education, Young Communist League, and the Vancouver East and Montivero Clubs of the Communist Party of Canada.
