Background
Kevin Neish, from Victoria, B.C., was a part of the international solidarity flotilla to break the siege and blockade of Gaza which was brutally stopped by the Israeli commandoes in the early morning hours of May 31, 2010. The flotilla, which included six ships with over 600 activists from more than 30 countries, was carrying 10,000 tons of humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza.
Neish explained, "I got a taste of life in Gaza for the day," after witnessing the massacre on board the MV Mavi Marmara, where Israeli Forces killed at least nine people. In addition to witnessing and speaking out, Neish smuggled out photographs documenting the Israeli massacre which have been published in the Turkish press.
This latest Israeli crime has been condemned worldwide. There have been protest actions across Canada -- including three rallies in Vancouver alone -- condemning the flotilla assault and the Harper government's uncritical support of Israel, whose Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was visiting with Harper in Ottawa when the May 31 massacre was carried out.

WOMEN'S TABLE DISCUSSIONS AT THE VANCOUVER PEOPLES' SUMMIT
Sunday, June 20th, 2010, 12:00PM to 1:45PM
Main Street, between 30th and 33rd Avenues (it is an outdoor event)
Email: amin at volunteer.oxfam.ca
The Vancouver International Women’s Day Planning Committee is very pleased to invite you to take part in the Women’s Table at the Vancouver Peoples’ Summit.
We need people to come and join our discussions on Women’s Right Initiatives at the Vancouver Peoples’ Summit! We’d love for you to join the discussions that will be taking place on several crucial Women’s Rights issues.
The Vancouver Peoples’ Summit will be a day-long event, and is intended to be civil society’s “counter-summit” to the G8/G20 Summits happening in Ontario from June 25th-27th. As part of the Vancouver Peoples’ Summit, there will be discussions taking place throughout the day on the important topics of Women’s Rights Initiatives, Climate Change, and the Global Economy.
The table that will be discussing Women’s Rights Initiatives, or “the Women’s Table,” will be taking place at 12:00PM to 1:45PM, and will be addressing the issues of Women’s/Maternal Health, CEDAW (The Convention for the Elimination of All forms of Discrimination Against Women), and Women at Work. The format will be such that these three issues will be discussed at three separate tables, and will be taking place simultaneously. Knowledgeable speakers have been confirmed for each table, and will be giving short speeches before each table moves on to discussing the topics at hand.
Here’s where you come in. We would love for you to partake in the discussions that will take place after the speakers’ presentations. The discussions will be centered around the questions: “What are the two most pressing issues regarding the topic of either Maternal Health, CEDAW, or Women at Work that we want Canadians to mobilize around?” “What actions can be taken by civil society and political leaders both at the G8/G20 Summits and beyond the Summits to ameliorate these issues?” We want to come up with concrete resolutions about crucial women’s issues for both civil society and the leaders of the world to seriously consider. We are looking for 5-6 people for each table (15-18 in total). The list of topics and speakers is presented below. If you have a preference for which table you’d like to be seated at, please let me know.
Women’s/Maternal Health
Joyce Arthur – Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada
Maureen Mayhew – UBC’s School of Population & Public Health, Faculty of Medicine; Bridge Health Clinic.
CEDAW
Kasari Govender – West Coast LEAF
Laurie Rogers – Walk 4 Justice
Women at Work
Andrina Perry – First Call BC
Tammy Findlay – Human Early Learning Partnership
You don’t want to miss out on this unique and timely opportunity to make your voice heard!
As the number of participants is limited, the seats will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. If you are interested in taking part in these discussions – and I urge you to do so! – please contact me at amin at volunteer.oxfam.ca . I will fill you in on the smaller event details once I hear back from you.
Thank you so much, and I hope to hear back from you very soon, as the day is quickly approaching!
On behalf of the Vancouver Peoples’ Summit and the Vancouver International Women’s Day Planning Committee,
Ami Nagatani
Campaigns Assistant
