The Vancouver International Storytelling Festival is amongst the longest running and most recognized storytelling festivals in Canada. The international storytelling movement is gaining momentum, and since 1998 the VSOS is committed to "storying" our lives! As we take charge of our personal narrative, we find the courage to live with hearts and hands wide open, telling inspiring personal stories as well as sharing the profound wisdom of ancient myths and fairytales.

A new element of this year's Festival is the documentation process. First Nations elders Cease Wyss and Woodrow Morrison will mentor youth interested in photographic and film technologies as well as witnessing practices and protocols. Stories told during the festival will then be given a tangible form and thus remain an accessible legacy for years to come.

June 11th & 12th | Daytime and evening programming featuring:

• Local and international artists & storytellers RC Weslowski, Allison Cox, Little Woo, Wang Su Ma, Jacques Lalonde, Kwii ge ii wans (Roberta Kennedy), Erin Graham, Mary Gavan, Zamir Dhanji, Les <<franco-contes>> and others, taking the stage during the day & at night

• French, Chinese & First Nations storytelling
• The Livingroom: a daytime story potluck buffet Saturday, June 12 11:00am-6:00pm
• The Longest Days: a workshop for storytellers on Saturday, June 12, 4:00pm-6:00pm
• A Chinatown Wander with legend Larry Wong, Saturday, June 12

For this part of the festival, the VSOS is honoured to partner with the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden ( www.vancouverchinesegarden.com ), a non-profit organization and one of Vancouver's top cultural attractions whose mission is to connect cultures and communities.

June 13th | StoryBox Sunday

At the heart of the City’s Great Beginnings Initiative is the desire to explore its roots and listen to the stories of each of its founding neighbourhoods. The StoryBox is a partnership between the VSOS and urban ink , a non-profit organization that develops and produces aboriginal and culturally diverse works of theatre, writing and film. On Sunday June 13, the bamboo grove in the public park adjacent to the Garden will be woven with red yarn. Referring to the through-line narrative of a story (often called a red thread) and also an homage to indigenous weaving techniques, this visually compelling listening space will be filled with the StoryBox storytellers.

COMMUNITY FORUM: Rejecting Kenney the Neo-conservative Ideologue

Monday June 14th, 2010, 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Learning Resource Room, Britannia Community Center (West side of Commercial Drive at Napier Street)

Website: www.nooneisillegal.org
Email: noii-van at resist.ca
Phone: 604.751.6990.

Join No One Is Illegal for a community forum and discussion on Conservative MP and Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Jason Kenney's recent neoconservative attacks on lesbian, gay, trans, and queer communities; Muslim women; immigrants; and his ongoing support for Canadian military occupations and the Israeli apartheid regime.

Speakers:

* Fatima Jaffer: journalist and community organizer with Coalition of South Asian Women Against Violence.

* Hanna Kawas: Palestinian activist from Bethlehem. He is the Chairperson of the Canada Palestine Association.

* Marla Renn: anti-war activist who has been active with Stopwar.ca and Vancouver Community Mobilization Network.

* Proma Tagore: writer, poet, and community organizer on anti-racist, feminist and queer issues. She is a member of No One Is Illegal-Vancouver.

Jason Kenney has repeatedly made comments about Canada not being a 'hotel' and wanting to get tough on immigrants who do not "integrate" or speak the (colonial) languages of English and French. Kenney also supports Quebec Bill C-94 that discriminates against women who wear the niqab (face veil) by denying them essential public services including health and education. This legislates the unequal treatment of Muslim women based on their choices of religious and personal expression.

In 2009, Kenney introduced a new citizenship guide which listed the obligations of citizenship as including getting a job and not engaging in "barbaric cultural practices". The latter section is accompanied by an image of a woman wearing a hijab. Notably omitted from this new citizenship guide is mention of the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans people. It was later revealed that Kenney had deliberately removed LGBT references from the guide.

The guide does, however, make ample room for Canada's military history and a recruitment advertisement given Kenney's vocal support for imperialist wars and military occupations:
- Labeling Iraq war resisters as bogus refugee claimants.
- Barring British MP George Galloway, because of his opposition to the military occupation of Afghanistan.
- Pulling Canada out of the Durban World Conference Against Racism even before the apartheid state of Israel did.
- Cutting ESL funding to the Canadian Arab Federation due to their involvement in pro-Palestinian efforts.

Join us in a forum and discussion on the role of Jason Kenney and the Canadian government in supporting oppression and occupation.

* Mark the date: July 24 People's March Against Jason Kenney: http://noii-van.resist.ca/?p=2025
* Download multilingual factsheets about Jason Kenney: http://noii-van.resist.ca/?p=2034
* Part of an ongoing campaign The People v. Jason Kenney: http://noii-van.resist.ca/?p=1027

No One Is Illegal is calling on you to join a growing campaign of people across the country who are making it known that we will not accept Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Jason Kenney's continuing violence against refugees and migrant workers, his racist attacks and tirades against immigrants, or his blatant acts of censorship of anti-occupation efforts.

DEFEND FISH LAKE!

Wednesday, June 16th, 12:30 pm, 2010
837 West Hastings Street, (Between Hornby and Howe)

Demonstration outside the AGM of Taseko Mines Ltd. Tell Harper and Taseko that we don't want Fake Lakes!

Taseko Mines Ltd. is having its Annual General Meeting on June 16th, in Vancouver. The company is currently seeking regulatory approval from the federal government to destroy Teztan Biny (Fish Lake), while developing their proposed Prosperity Mine. The copper and gold mine is proposed to operate in the heart of Tsilhqot'in territories, south-west of Williams Lake, BC.

The Tsilhqot'in Nation have clearly and collectively said ‘No’ to a project which would jeopardize a sacred site of great cultural and historic significance. The Tsilhqot'in communities have not given consent to the Prosperity Mine project that will be in an area of proven aboriginal rights as determined in the Supreme Court of B.C. Secwepmec communities have also expressed opposition to to the development of a power line needed to develop the mine through their territories. The Canadian Government continues to refuse signing the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The possible approval of the Prosperity Mine clearly demonstrates the federal and provincial governments’ ongoing violation of the rights of indigenous communities.

An estimated 85,000 rainbow trout will have their habitat destroyed if Taskeo’s project goes ahead. Given the threats to the watershed and the need to protect slowly depleting sources of fresh pristine water everywhere, we must continue stand up to Taseko and all levels of complicit government. While Stephen Harper builds artificial lakes in downtown Toronto to impress the international attendees of the G20, Taseko is proposing its own fake "prosperity lake" to compensate for the destruction of Fish Like. Come tell Harper and Taseko that we don't want their fake lakes! Join us for a demonstration outside of Taseko's AGM and let's be the uncertainty for their investors!

For more information please email: hgrewal at canadians.org or call: 604 340 2455

This demonstration is endorsed by the Council of Canadians, Friends of the Nemaiah Valley, Indigenous Action Movement, MiningWatch Canada and Respecting Aboriginal Values and Environmental Needs (RAVEN).

If you would like to endorse this action please email hgrewal at canadians.org

SUMMER FREE SCHOOL AT THE UBC FARM

Friday July 30th and Saturday July 31st, 2010
The UBC Farm, Vancouver, BC, Canada
Website: http://summerfreeschool.wordpress.com/

The Concept:
We all have something to teach, and we all have a lot to learn. That’s what Free School is all about. On July 30-31st, we will share our accumulated knowledge of matters practical, theoretical and radical. We will also celebrate, discuss, make music, get to know the land, eat, and connect with friends old and new.

The History:
The idea of the Free School comes from a place called Waldegrave Farm in Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia, where an inter-generational group of people has gathered every summer over the past 5 years to share skills, knowledge, stories and adventures on a voluntary basis. Free School has featured discussions, workshops and seminars on everything you always wanted to know, and some things you didn’t even know you were interested in, ranging from solving algebra problems to green building techniques, from sustainable gardening to raising healthy families and communities, and from setting up a co-op business to playing the banjo!

The Invitation:
This summer, we are pleased to bring Free School to the UBC Farm.
You're invited to participate. Think about what you would teach if you had a captive audience for an hour or two, what conversation you would host, what game you would start, what skill would you share? This is your chance to shape what Free School becomes. Propose a session when you sign up, or simply come and check out others' sessions. And please invite others: word of mouth is the Free School’s best friend.

HELP SUPPORT THE EYA ORCHARD, GARDEN, AND FOOD PROJECT

Every Tuesday from 4-6pm

Corner of Raymur Ave. and Malkin Ave.
Email: samantha at eya.ca
Phone: 604-689-4446.
Website: http://www.eya.ca/community-orchard.html

This season, the Environmental Youth Alliance is partnering with the Vancouver Food Bank, staff at the City of Vancouver Dog Pound, The Strathcona Community Centre and neighbours to create a community orchard and picnic area on the edge of the EYA Youth Garden in Cottonwood Community Garden. Situated right at the corner of Raymur St. and Malkin Ave, this corner has a lot of exposure! However, sadly, does not have a lot of charm. It is currently covered in blackberries and other invasive weeds, and up until recently sick/unproductive fruit trees.

Call to Action
Thanks to the Vancouver Park Board, EYA has been granted a neighbourhood Matching Grant to work with the community to create an orchard and picnic area on this site. Please join us in re-designing the area, planting it and creating some colourful interesting seating. EYA needs your imagination and muscle! Once this corner is producing food, the Vancouver Food Bank will work with EYA to distribute the food to their clients or to partner community kitchen projects. Community kitchens work with groups of individuals teaching/practicing cooking skills and building knowledge around food security.

Donations Needed
Lumber/hardware for building the picnic tables/benches
Fruit Trees or divisions of Edible Plants

Contact/Get involved
To donate, get on the mailing list, or to help out at ongoing design, weeding or planting session, or just to find out more, please contact samantha at eya.ca or call 604-689-4446.

Work on the site (corner of Raymur Ave. and Malkin Ave.) will be every Tuesday from 4-6pm For more information on the project, visit: http://www.eya.ca/community-orchard.html

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES WITH GOBEYOND

goBEYOND is a youth-led project which works to educate, inspire, engage and support our peers in taking climate action at British Columbia's colleges and universities. We believe our campuses can goBEYOND climate-neutral by taking responsibility for social and ecological impacts while taking the opportunity to create climate change solutions for our communities.

goBEYOND Working Groups
The goBEYOND Working Groups are a great way to get involved in shaping the movement. There will be roughly two conference calls a month, and some work in between. We are looking for volunteers who are self-directed and can take initiative, who are passionate about climate change issues and youth leadership, and who are interested in learning new skills. Below are 6 areas that you can get involved with!

1. Outreach and Communications: This group will develop an awesome communications strategy for goBEYOND that features both online tools, print media, and face to face campaigning. This is the perfect working group for outgoing people, writers, artists, design majors, or journalism types.

2. Bylaws: goBEYOND has incorporated and we're in the process of designing an innovative governance structure that fits our values. This will be a great opportunity to learn about the world of non-profit governance.

3. Fundraising and Admin: Ok fundraising may sound boring, but it is one of the most important skills you can learn for work in the NGO field. Environmental Organizations are always going to need money, and volunteering with this group will give you the tools to bring in the money (hopefully). Tasks might include planning fundraising events, meeting with potential donors, and making decisions about where all the money goes once we have it.

4. Strategic Planning: Are you a big picture thinker? This group will be charged with drafting a 5-year strategic plan for the organization.

5. Program Development : The Program Development Working Groups will follow up on the direction set at the Project Development Summit , and b uild on our existing programs for the fall semester of goBEYOND. Sub-groups include:

• Education Working Group: Will develop next year's goBEYOND Teach-In and other aspects of the education pillar, such as the Sustainability Education Across the Province short course for faculty who are integrating Sustainability into curriculum
• Planning Working Group: Looking at ways to improve the Planning Pillar and support schools in developing collaborative and integrated climate action strategies.
• Challenges Working Group: Ensuring that the goBEYOND Challenge is cutting edge and relevant. Would look into things like: inter-campus challenge, and energy reduction projects for campuses.
• Training Working Group: How can goBEYOND build the capacity of student leaders to be even more effective?
• International Working Group: This year the goBEYOND teach-in went international. How can we build on this success to go beyond Canada's borders?

6. Youth Action Gathering
Aug. 31- Sept. 5, we're organizing the sixth goBEYOND Youth Action Gathering. This will be another amazing week filled with workshops, activities and great food. The YAGs are transformative experiences for many participants, and they're also a great way to get event organizing experience!

If any of these strike your fancy, or you'd like to talk more with someone, contact Spencer Rasmussen at spencer.g.rasmussen at gmail.com .
