34TH ANNUAL POWELL STREET FESTIVAL
Saturday, July 31st and Sunday, August 1st, 2010
11:30 am to 7 pm
Oppenheimer Park (400 block Powell Street), Vancouver
The Powell Street Festival is an annual celebration of Japanese Canadian arts, culture and heritage that features something for everyone: dance, music, film and video, visual arts, martial arts demos, amateur sumo tournament, craft vendors, traditional displays, and of course, tons of scrumptious Japanese food!
After last year’ one-year relocation to Woodland Park, the Powell Street Festival will return to its traditional home in the newly-renovated Oppenheimer Park. Taking inspiration from the Japanese notion of Koen debut, or Park debut, whereupon neighbourhood toddlers are introduced to their local community, the 34th Annual Powell Street Festival celebrates the idea of neighbourhood, youth, children, the park and its landscape.
The season’s many shades of Park themed events begins with the artistic collaboration between Andrea Nann and Maiko Bae Yamamoto who perform a new interdisciplinary work set in the historic Vancouver Japanese Language School (located nearby the Park), a new series of youth-directed and community-based theatrical PodPlays set in the Oppenheimer area by NeWorld Theatre, performances by local bluegrass band Shout!WhiteDragon, and the experimental performance and public interactive exchange by Tochka Factory.

@ 865 Hornby, corner Smithe
Email: project at dewc.ca
Phone: 604-681-8480 x 234.
The Ministry of Child and Family Development (MCFD) has forcibly removed many children from their families, especially from single mothers, poor families, Indigenous communities, and from parents who were themselves caught in the vicious cycle of foster homes. There are currently more Indigenous children in the child welfare system than there were in the residential school system. Thousands of mothers and families are enduring surveillance and scrutiny instead of receiving support.
The Downtown Eastside Power of Women Group is organizing to defend and support healthy families. Almost all the women in our group have had their children apprehended temporarily or permanently, or are currently facing the threat of child apprehension.
All welcome, please join us!

While pursuing his studies in various universities, he also took steps to help those he left behind. Floribert's passion and desire to see his family out of a rough and insecure situation as refugees in Ugandan inspired efforts to sponsor them to start a new life in Canada. He managed to sponsor his 3 brothers, one sister, and 3 cousins. Floribert has saved numerous lives through his career as a nurse and through his humanitarian work campaigning to support student refugees. Through the SRP, which provides refugee students with the opportunity for an education, he has participated in various campaigns to raise funds for the SRP at Simon Fraser University in 2000, and at the University of Calgary in May 2010 that has allowed this institution to sponsor more students per year. Floribert is an active member of the Umoja Operation Compassion Society of BC, a non-profit organization that supports new immigrants, where he brings expertise in refugee settlement through his own personal experience.
Proceeds will go to the Dzaleka Project's initiative to sponsor a 9 member family from Dzaleka refugee camp to start a new life in Canada.

CRUDE: The Real Price of Oil
Directed by Joe Berlinger, USA, 2009, 100 minutes
In the wake of massive oil spills in the Gulf of Mexico and Michigan, this month's Left Film Night is particularly timely and relevant. CRUDE is the story of a landmark case in the Amazon jungle, pitting 30,000 rainforest dwellers against the U.S. oil giant Chevron. The plaintiffs claim that Texaco – which merged with Chevron in 2001 – contaminated one of the most biodiverse regions on Earth, creating a “death zone”, resulting in cancer, leukemia, and birth defects. Chevron charges that the case is a fabrication by “environmental con men”. The case takes place not just in a courtroom, but in a series of field inspections at the alleged contamination sites, with the judge and attorneys for both sides trudging through the jungle to litigate.
Coffee and refreshments available. Left Film Nights are presented by the Centre for Socialist Education, Young Communist League, and the Vancouver East and Montivero Clubs of the Communist Party of Canada.
