The Campus Composting Coalition Needs You!

For the next two weeks there will be a series of post-consumer waste audits done at the Mackenzie and possibly Residence Hall cafeterias at SFU Burnab.

The Composting Coalition is looking for volunteers to help out with the audit.

The main need is for people around 4:30/5 from Monday - Friday to just weigh the bags of post-consumer goods, no getting your hands dirty, just weighing and marking down.

Residence administration on all sides are all on board with us running this waste audit and feel that it is an important part of the future plan of University life.

For the past 10 years there have been attempts made at different levels each with the same effect, nothing continued. We have a chance to show that students are not going to give up.

There are still shifts as well, both in the morning and in the afternoon for Mackenzie, and aside from the weighers at the end of the day at Residence, it would be great if we could get a few people to volunteer around noon/1pm to see how things are going at the residence end.

For more info or to volunteer email Heidi (hjp3 at sfu.ca) or christopher_mulvena at sfu.ca.

Living on Earth as if We Want to Stay

an open discussion by Mike Nickerson about adapting to our changing times

Tuesday January 19, 2010 7-9 PM
121 Heatley Avenue
Vancouver

Issues of climate, energy and economic stability are all related to the fact that human activity has now grown to touch planetary limits.

No amount of public relations or technical fixes can perpetuate the system that has grown humankind from insignificance to where we affect everything on Earth. It took thousands of doublings in our activity to bring us to our present size. Another doubling would fill another whole planet.

Mike Nickerson has spent 35 years studying cultural evolution, in particular, how our societies might make the transition to sustainability. He is the author of "Life, Money and Illusion; Living on Earth as if We Want to Say" recently published in its second edition by New Society Publishers.

SCORCHED: a THEATRE INCONNU production

Theatre Inconnu in association with ITSAZOO productions present SCORCHED by Wajdi Mouawad, translation by Linda Gaboriau, January 19 - 31 at the Waterfront Theatre in Vancouver.

This 2007 Dora Award winning play explores themes growing out of the immigrant/refugee experience. It has proven itself one of the most powerfully engaging dramatic works to be produced in this country during the past three years. Civil war in the Middle East forms the backdrop for much of the play's action as Mouawad explores with profound insight the concepts of love, loyalty, and betrayal.

The plot revolves around a brother and sister's quest to unearth the history - and mystery - of their deceased immigrant mother. As their journey takes them to the Middle East, they enter into a process of coming to terms with their own sense of loss and emptiness, while learning to understand the legacy of suffering left in the wake of conflict.

January 19 - 31, 2010
Waterfront Theatre, Granville Island
Tickets $18 / $15
Tuesday - Saturday @ 8pm
Saturday & Sunday Matinees @ 2pm
