UBC hosts sexual assault awareness events

Events: Sexual Assault Awareness Month. A month of events to build
awareness of sexual assault and safety issues.

Date: Throughout January (see below)

Location: Events and locations across UBC’s campus

During the month of January UBC’s Vancouver campus will host several
experts and events to promote awareness of the serious issue of sexual
assault and safety on university campuses.

Jan. 13: Dissolve – A film about drug-facilitated sexual assault.
Screening and panel discussion with Tracy Porteous (Ending Violence
Association of BC), Helen Griffiths (BC Women’s Sexual Assault
Service) and Anoushka Ratnarajah (AMS Womyn’s Centre at UBC). 6 p.m.,
Rm 182, Irving K. Barber Learning Centre, 1961 East Mall.

Jan. 21: Theatrical performance by Dissolve film producer Meghan
Gardiner, followed by a Q&A. 7 p.m. Dorothy Somerset Studio, 6361
University Boulevard. Cost: $5.Tickets: SASC, Access & Diversity and
Main Booth in the SUB during Arts Week.

Jan. 26: Community rally and march around campus. 4 – 6 p.m. Student
Union Building, 6138 Student Union Boulevard.

Jan. 28: Tough Guys: Sexual Violence, Media, and the Crisis in
Masculinity- A public lecture on gender and violence by international
educator Jackson Katz. 6 p.m., Hebb Theatre, Hebb Building, 2045 East
Mall.

Jan. 29: Taking It Personally: Why Gender Violence is an Issue for Men
– a student workshop with Jackson Katz. 10 a.m. to noon, Rm 100,
Neville Scarfe Building, 2125 Main Mall.

The events are part of a Sexual Assault Awareness Month sponsored by
Faculty of Arts – Deans Office, UBC Women’s and Gender Studies
Program, Critical Studies in Sexuality (CSIS), Centre for Women’s and
Gender Studies, UBC V-Day, Access and Diversity, Arts Undergraduate
Society, Alma Mater Society Womyn’s Centre and Sexual Assault Support
Centre (SASC) and Office of the VP Students.
