The 19th Annual February 14th Women's Memorial March
Sunday , February 14 2010 and begins at 12pm.
We gather each year to mourn and remember our sisters by listening to
their family members, by taking over the streets, and through spiritual
ceremonies. At noon, we gather at the Carnegie Community Centre Theatre,
401 Main Street (corner Hastings, Vancouver) where family members speak in
remembrance. At 1 pm, the march takes to the streets and proceeds through
the Downtown Eastside, with stops to commemorate where women were last
seen or found; speeches by community activists at the police station; a
healing circle at Oppenheimer Park around 3 pm; and finally a community
feast at the Japanese Language Hall.
The heinous and unimaginable violence that have taken the lives of so many
has left a deep void in our hearts. The February 14th Womens
Memorial March is an opportunity to come together to grieve the loss of
our beloved sisters, remember the women who are still missing, and to
dedicate ourselves to justice. Please join us (all genders welcome) and
we thank you for your support of the Womens Memorial March .

The upcoming 2010 Winter Olympics has escalated the homelessness crisis in
Vancouver's Downtown Eastside and the Greater Vancouver area. Since the
Olympic bid, homelessness has nearly tripled in the GVRD, while real
estate and condominium development in the Downtown Eastside is outpacing
social housing by a rate of 3:1. Meanwhile, a heightened police presence
has further criminalized those living in extreme material poverty in the
poorest postal code in Canada.
With the eyes of the world on Vancouver, residents of the Downtown
Eastside and our supporters will be taking the streets to affirm our call
for justice and dignity. We want:
1. Real action to end homelessness now
2. End condo development and displacement in the Downtown Eastside
3. End discriminatory ticketing, police harassment, and all forms of
criminalization of poverty.
No more empty talk and no more empty lots.

Planning for Resilience: Identifying the Tools to Move from Knowledge to Action
March 4th and 5th, UBC
Resilience is the capacity of a system to absorb disturbance and still retain its basic functions.
Resilience thinking and doing is about understanding and engaging with a changing world.
Some have argued that it is a deceptively simple idea, but its application to systems of humans and nature has proven elusive. How can we plan for resilience?
The School of Community and Regional Planning (SCARP) at UBC is excited to announce its second annual Symposium Planning for Resilience: Identifying the Tools to Move from Knowledge to Action. The main event is March 5 with a wine and cheese event the evening of March 4. The day will include a broad range of panel discussions with a diversity of perspectives from students, practitioners, and academics drawing from Planning, Architecture, Journalism, Geography, Resource Management, Landscape Architecture, Engineering, and more.
For more details and to register visit http://cfis.ubc.ca/resiliencehome.html or contact us at resilient.symposium at gmail.com.

Border Tongues: Exploring Ways To Foster Language Justice
a FREE, introductory workshop that offers womyn, who have experienced silencing because of language, the opportunity to engage in storytelling and creative writing.
March 6th, 2010
10am - 4pm
Kiwassa Neighbourhood House
2425 Oxford St.
APPLY BY FEBRUARY 22, 2010 (form attached)
Lunch and return bus tickets available.Register for on-site childcare. Space is wheelchair-accessible.
Who can access it?
We strongly encourage womyn facing systemic barriers due to race, poverty, disability, sexual or gender identity, among others, to apply.
We have a maximum space for twelve participants. Please apply early.
Participants in this workshop will:
· begin making connections between social justice, linguistic rights, and antiracist feminist practice in our communities;
· address the silencing and uprooting of people’s languages through colonization and linguistic imperialism; and,
· begin to build a friendly and supportive space to reclaim their voices and explore their strength through storytelling and writing.
Have you been told “you don’t speak” the dominant language, despite holding daily conversations in it? Have you been subtly or openly reminded of “your accent”, when really they mean “your foreign accent”? Have you felt silenced, voiceless, because people often ask “what” when you speak? Did you or your community lose your language because of the legacies of colonialism?
You speak… no one seems to listen?
This workshop is for womyn who have experienced silencing and disempowerment due to language barriers and languages lost. Through a set of hands-on storytelling and creative exercises, coupled with critical reflection on social justice, participants will begin exploring the emancipatory potential of non-dominant, nonconformist approaches, and border languages. Participants are encouraged to bring the bilingual, multilingual, or monolingual dictionary of their preference to help facilitate their creative storytelling process during the session. Ultimately, by drawing on personal experience and engaging in creative body, verbal, and written exercises, the facilitators hope to provide a safe and supportive space for participants to gain self-affirming skills that help them navigate the cutting of their/our tongues.
We regret we are unable to support women with no proficiency in English in this introductory workshop, as our resources are limited at the moment. But we are hoping to have the means to redress this issue in future sessions.
This workshop is best suited for individuals with no prior or extensive creative writing experience.
Send applications and questions to:
