THE BREAKTHROUGH MAMAS COLLECTIVE: FROM GHOST TO FLESH: SINGLE MOTHERHOOD IN THE CITY
Part One - From Isolation to Community

Sunday, December 12, 6:00-9:00pm
Rhizome Café, 317 East Broadway, Vancouver, Unceded Coast Salish Territories
Free

Join us for an evening of participatory dialogue (including popular theatre!) and celebratory performances. We challenge the violence of poverty, racism and hetero-patriarchy that isolate us from each other, individuate us in our experiences and prevent us from collectively organizing. We believe mothering can be a revolutionary practice to build a world that is more just and loving.. As we struggle for liberating conditions of motherhood, we want to listen and learn from people, especially those who practice mothering, in our community! So please come out and share your dreams and challenges with us.

Special invite to single mothers and our children, especially those who identify as indigenous, racialized/of colour, and poor/low-income. If you are a mama and you are interested in performing something (poem, song, story...) please get in touch with us (see contact info below).
All genders welcome and celebrated!
Important Notices
1) We need allies' support with outreach! Please let us know if you can help with postering or other forms of outreach!
2) We are starting an e-mail list. If you would like to be on the list, e-mail us (see info above) with "put me on list" in the subject heading.

Contact us at 604-710-5480 or breakthrough.mamas at gmail.com.

About Richard Wilkinson
Richard Wilkinson’s work has shaped research on the social determinants of health for over thirty years. Recently, he co-authored the international best-seller The Spirit Level: Why More Equal Societies Almost Always Do Better with Kate Pickett, a ground-breaking book that has transformed our views on the interactions between income inequality and health. Dr. Wilkinson co-founded the Equality Trust to further public education about inequality and its consequences, and why reducing income disparity benefits all members of society.

Dr. Wilkinson has played a formative role in public awareness and policy development. He began his academic career at the London School of Economics where he studied economic history and then transitioned to the field of epidemiology. He currently is Emeritus Professor of Social Epidemiology at the University of Nottingham, and an honorary professor at both the University College London and the University of York. He has written a dozen books and numerous research papers, and his work has been published in ten languages.

Introduction: Clyde Hertzman, UBC School of Population and Public Health and Director of Human Early Learning Partnership

Moderator: Mark Winston, Academic Director and Fellow, SFU Centre for Dialogue

NO CELEBRATION IN DETENTION

Saturday, December 18, International Migrants Day, 1:30 pm
Burnaby Youth Custody Services Centre where mothers and children who arrived aboard MV Sun Sea are being detained.
Address: 7900 Fraser Park Dr, Burnaby

Rides leaving Edmonds station from 1:00 until 1:15. If you can, please make a small donation so we can continue to rent the equipment needed to make this happen!
International Migrants Day is marked globally on December 18 as a day of solidarity with the struggles of migrants. This year, during the holiday season, we honor the survival and dignity of the Tamil refugees, over 400 of whom remain behind bars three months after arriving on the shores of BC (unceded Indigenous land).
Join us in a prison support rally in front of the Burnaby Youth Custody Services Centre where mothers and children who arrived aboard MV Sun Sea are being detained. Let them know that we know there is no celebration till we are all free!
Every day, migrants in Canada endure the indignities of lack of status, detention, deportation, discrimination, labor exploitation, poverty, and the brunt of the anti-terror regime. Meanwhile, the Canadian government supports international agreements that allow the free movement of capital across the globe, giving people no choice but to migrate in the face of poverty, militarization, and displacement.
Canada’s immigration system is not broken. It is the result of a perfected system of social control, containment, and commodification. Most recently, under the banner of combating “human smuggling” and “queue-jumping”, Public Safety Minister Vic Toews and Minister of Censorship and Deportation Jason Kenney introduced Bill C49, which blatantly criminalizes refugees and targets them for imprisonment and/or deportation.
For every arbitrary detention, for every summary deportation, for every minute spent in jail, for every anxious day spent waiting for status, for every dehumanizing hour spent working in Canadian sweatshops— for all the stolen time and the stolen lives — we pay tribute to the courage and resistance of migrants.
Release Detained Asylum-Seekers!
Justice, Freedom, and Status for All!
Right to Stay, Freedom to Move, Right to Return!

ARE YOU A LAW STUDENT IN CANADA INTERESTED IN SOCIAL JUSTICE? JOIN THE JUSTICE LEAGUE!

Justice League-Canada is a nationwide listserv for progressive law students, articling students, and new calls. Its purpose is to create a national grassroots network, in which we can foster a supportive community of like-minded peers. One anticipated outcome of this is that by sharing resources and energy, we can do sustained work across the country in our capacities as law students, advocates, and lawyers. Additionally, this space can be used to highlight job opportunities outside the usual big firm market, as well as to hone academic interests and assist local community organisations and campaigns.
