Industrial Workers of the World Organizer Training
Saturday and Sunday, December 5th and 6th from 9:30-4:30
SFU Harbour Centre
What do Helen Keller, Joe Hill, and Noam Chomsky all have in common - they
were all Wobblies; that is, they were members of the IWW, or Industrial Workers of the World.
Since 1905, members of the IWW have been agitating, educating, and
organizing the workers of the world into one big union to abolish the wage
system and help create a better world. The over 100 years of fighting
history of the IWW is very much alive and new, radical voices are needed to
help shape the present and future. Organizing in today's climate is no doubt
a challenge - but the IWW's success in organizing Starbucks shops, for
example, provides interesting lessons for all activists. But what can be
done in our workplaces and communities?
To help generate some answers, the Vancouver IWW branch is holding a special
Organizer Training (open to anyone, regardless of wanting to be an
organizer)on Saturday and Sunday, December 5th and 6th from 9:30-4:30. This
event will give you the practical skills needed to make a difference in
today's world and will take place at SFU Harbour Centre campus located in
the heart of downtown Vancouver. We are lucky to have trained IWW
Organizers from Portland and Edmonton coming to lead the interactive and
participatory sessions. We encourage you to donate $5-10 dollars on a
sliding scale to help pay for the travel of our Organizers, but no one will
be turned away.

Hurricane Relief for the People of El Salvador
Alert: El Salvador devastated by Hurricane Ida –
Help us raise $10,000 by December 13, 2009!
Dear Friends in Solidarity,
Hurricane Ida hit El Salvador on Saturday, devastating the country, especially the capital of San Salvador and the departments of San Vicente, La Paz and Cuscatl?n. Though more than 13,000 families were evacuated, there are already 150 deaths reported as a result of landslides and massive flooding. Over 250 homes have been completely destroyed and another 1800 damaged.
A 20-foot container has been provided to send donations to El Salvador before November 26, 2009. There is high demand for the following items:
Body soap, shampoo, powder laundry detergent, tooth brushes and paste, toilet paper, sanitary pads, disposable pampers for children and adults, cotton towels, air bed / mat, blankets, 20-yard plastic rolls, tents, energy generating plants, rain coats, hand lamps, construction helmets and gloves, and portable toilets.
Please call Roberto Castro by 10 am at (604) 430-0423 to make arrangements to bring your donations to his factory located at 1279 Clark Drive (Charles / Williams St.), Vancouver before November 25.
Rescue teams are removing tons of mud, rubble and trees in search of over 70 people who are still missing, most from the community of Verapaz. Rescue workers are reporting a lack of equipment and trained rescue dogs, limiting their ability to rescue people who may still be trapped.
Many in El Salvador point out that the devastation caused by natural disasters like hurricanes and earthquakes is so far reaching in part due to decades of neglectful mismanagement of emergency response and lack of appropriate infrastructure development. The level of destruction is exacerbated by the dire economic situation that forces people to live in precarious conditions; in tin shacks, in marginalized communities, at the edge of rivers, and next to cliffs.
Please call 778-883-6161 if you need further information regarding the container or donations.
We want to raise $10,000 by December 13 for disaster relief
Please make your donation to the following bank account:
Bank: Vancity Name : El Salvador Hurricane Relief Account number : 13-449785
Or write a cheque to "El Salvador Hurricane Relief" and mail it to this address.

Speak out against Bill 18: Assistance to Shelter Act
To Whom It May Concern:
This is a callout for support and coalition-building against the proposed Assistance to Shelter Act, Provincial Bill 18. We invite you to work with us and other coalition members towards stopping the passage and subsequent implementation of this highly unjust legislation. This callout comes with great urgency: the bill has passed its second reading (Nov. 7) and will be going into its 3rd and final reading in the next week. It is extremely important for us to respond to this tool of gentrification with a swift, coordinated response.
We hope to build on the open letter sent by Pivot Legal Society to the Minster of Housing on Nov. 5, signed by a coalition of signatories. Our goal is to expand opposition to include active campaigning and community organizing.
There will be two ways for groups and individuals to contribute to the coalition: first, in the capacity of signatory to coalition documents, petitions and callouts; secondly, as an active member of the coalition, with an active representative at coalition meetings. We hope the coalition will harness the collective creativity of its members, and use all the tools in the activist toolkit – including community mobilization, marches, letter-writing campaigns, etc.
As there is, unfortunately, no time to lose, we propose an initial meeting at 5:30pm, Thursday November 19 in the 3rd Floor Gallery of the Carnegie Centre (401 Main St, corner of Main & Hastings).
Should the proposed legislation pass its 3rd reading, the coalition can continue to organize against the Act’s enforcement in the lead-up to the Olympics. A cohesive network of organizations will be needed to respond to ongoing displacement and criminalization of poverty.
Problems with the legislation
Unjust: There is no justice in legislation that grants enforcement officers the authority to coercively displace persons against their will.
Unconstitutional: By forcibly sheltering the street homeless, the proposed law violates Canadians’ fundamental Charter rights to “not be arbitrarily detained or imprisoned” (Section 9 of Charter of Rights and Freedoms).
Breach of Olympic contract: The proposed legislation undermines the Olympic Inner-City Inclusivity Commitment to “Ensure residents are not involuntarily displaced”.
Open to abuse: The proposed legislation grants the Minister the power to declare a weather emergency at his discretion and to direct police to round people up during the Olympics, and contains no language to explicitly guard against such abuse.
Bad for the homeless: reasonable force is not defined in the legislation, leaving open the possibility of increased violence against those perceived to be homeless. The legislation does not explicitly protect the property or belongings of those captured. The law would push British Columbia’s street homeless and most marginalized into harder-to-find lactations, and place them at an increased risk of abuse.
Bad for the police: it is inappropriate for police to be doing the job of social workers.
Bad for shelter providers: shelter providers will be left to accommodate people who have been coercively brought to their doorstep; those captured may have been violated or deprived of their possessions, and may as a result: be agitated, require medical attention, or wish to file a complaint.
We look forward to your response, and to working together.
Signed,
Vancouver Action (VanAct): taking strategic action to safeguard the social well-being of all Vancouver residents. Currently, VANACT is working to counter the lasting negative effects of the Olympic Games.
