What do Helen Keller, Joe Hill, and Noam Chomsky all have in common - they
were all Wobblies; that is, they were members of the IWW, or Industrial
Workers of the World.
Since 1905, members of the IWW have been agitating, educating, and
organizing the workers of the world into one big union to abolish the wage
system and help create a better world. The over 100 years of fighting
history of the IWW is very much alive and new, radical voices are needed to
help shape the present and future. Organizing in today's climate is no doubt
a challenge - but the IWW's success in organizing Starbucks shops, for
example, provides interesting lessons for all activists. But what can be
done in our workplaces and communities?
To help generate some answers, the Vancouver IWW branch is holding a special
Organizer Training (open to anyone, regardless of wanting to be an
organizer)on Saturday and Sunday, December 5th and 6th from 9:30-4:30. This
event will give you the practical skills needed to make a difference in
today's world and will take place at SFU Harbour Centre campus located in
the heart of downtown Vancouver. We are lucky to have trained IWW
Organizers from Portland and Edmonton coming to lead the interactive and
participatory sessions. We encourage you to donate $5-10 dollars on a
sliding scale to help pay for the travel of our Organizers, but no one will
be turned away.
There is still space left: IF YOU ARE INTERESTED, PLEASE RSVP:
