Subject: March for Social and Economic Justice for BC
Economic and Social Justice - That's what we're marching for!
Saturday, May 9, 1PM: Rally and March for Social and Economic Justice for BC
(Starts at Clark Park - 14th and Commercial)
Thursday, May 7, 6:30PM: Roundtable Discussion: Fighting for a People's
Agenda for BC (Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House - 800 E. Broadway)
This Saturday, days before the Provincial election, grassroots groups will
hold a march and tour through East Vancouver to expose the legacy of 8 years
of cuts and neoliberal attacks under the BC liberals. The action will
emphasize the need to organize communities in order to achieve real social
and economic justice for BC. The action is being put on by groups
affiliated to the Organizing Centre for Social and Economic Justice: the Bus
Riders Union, the Alliance for Peoples Health and the OC Labour Committee.
"The BC Liberals are responsible for almost a decade of cuts to public
services, privatization, union busting and other attacks on working class
people and communities," says march organizer Jen Efting. "Our march aims
to expose the countless human tragedies that have come as a consequence of
this greedy neoliberal regime that puts profit before the people and the
interest of big business ahead of the needs of communities."
The tour will take in sites that highlight the Liberal cuts: a fastfood
restaurant that pays the training wage; a dental clinic to highlight the
lack of coverage for dental health for low income people; and a welfare
office; a bank that continues to post huge profits despite the economic
crisis; and a temp labour broker. However, the rally will not focus on
voting in the election on Tuesday, May 12, but will emphasize the need for
grassroots community organizing and mobilization.
"As much as the this Liberal government has been a disaster for working
class and marginalized people in BC, we have to recognize that the
neoliberal processes of privatization, deregulation and trade liberalization
are much bigger than any one government," says Efting. "Under the previous
NDP regime poor people were vilified and welfare was cut, workers exercising
their right to strike were legislated back to work, and indigenous people
were subjected to a massive military assault at Gustafson Lake."
"If we are going to begin to turn the tide of neoliberalism and achieve
social and economic justice for this province, we need a grassroots movement
that can counter the power of corporations and the rich and hold the
provincial government accountable to real needs of people and communities,
regardless of what party is in power."
The march is preceded by a Roundtable Discussion on Thursday with community
groups actively organizing for social and economic justice in BC.
