Vancouver Status of Women is excited to present

Two-Spirit & Trans Issues Workshop

August 15, 2009

12:30 - 4:30

Kiwassa Neighbourhood House

2425 Oxford Street

Vancouver - Unceded Coast Salish Territory

Facilitated by

Louis Cruz

Some things I'd like you to know about me, Louis Esme Cruz: Mi'kmaq/Acadian
from Fredricton, New Brunswick and Irish from Co. Dublin/Isle of Man, I grew
up predominantly on Sto:lo and Coast Salish territories. I've lived in
Vancouver proper for 12 years, since I left highschool in grade 11. In 1999,
I was run over by an 18-wheeler - an event which radically altered my
understandings of the world and my place in it - and a year later I lost my
Irish father, which further changed my relationship to life. Over the past
ten years I have undergone other radical changes including getting married
and being separated from a brilliant person, becoming more fully a
female-man, altering my colonial names, graduating from an art degree
program, as well as reconnecting with my ancestors, blood and chosen
families, and connecting to my understanding of place on this Land. I really
like talking to people about trans and two-spirit issues as they relate to
the assertion of indigenous land, language, renewal and governance. I'm
still learning.

Childcare, bus tickets and light refreshments provided.

Please register by Friday, AUGUST 7 (registration form attached).

Donations to support VSW's Leadership Empowerment Activism Program (LEAP)
are appreciated ($5-20 sliding scale); no one turned away for lack of funds.

**********************************************

The Leadership Empowerment Activism Program (LEAP) is a FREE 18-month
program of Vancouver Status of Women that offers training and mentorship in
anti-oppression, community organizing, transformative leadership, popular
education, creative expression and group facilitation to womyn facing
multiple systemic barriers including colonialism, racism, poverty,
disability, LGBTQ identity and single motherhood.

Due to the immense response that we received from the community in terms of
need for this program, we have taken on more participants than originally
planned. We need more resources to offer adequate accessibility provisions
for our participants and their children (food, bus tickets, stipends,
children's materials).

If you are interested in volunteering with LEAP, please get in touch with
Cynthia Oka, LEAP Coordinator, at <mailto:leapcoordinator at vsw.ca>
leapcoordinator at vsw.ca or 604-255-6554. Exciting volunteer opportunities
include participation in our (revolutionary!) child care and fundraising
committees, as well as developing skills in logistical and administrative
support.
