"Defending yourself against the law: A legal workshop": Grassroots
activists often need legal representation, especially in criminal and
civil liberties matters. This is a basic legal workshop on knowing your
rights particularly in the context of protests and civil disobedience when
interacting with the police. This includes covering the time before,
during, and after an arrest, as well as providing a basic overview of the
court process and common charges faced by activists.

Peter Edelmann is a Vancouver lawyer practicing in the areas of criminal
defence and immigration law. He has many years of experience working with
and doing legal support for political and social activists in Quebec and
British Columbia. He can be reached at peter at edelmann.ca.

==> ABOUT THE SERIES <==

A series of workshops and educationals that aims to provide practical
information and resources on the following:

- "Basic research skills: Beyond Google Searches"
- "Defending yourself against the law: A legal workshop"
- "Getting your thoughts on paper: writing, editing, and publishing"
- "Everything you wanted to know about economics but were afraid to ask"
- "Too nervous to speak: Tips on public speaking"
- "Protect yourself: Security Culture 101"
- "Exploring creative expression as a form of resistance"

Although an ad-hoc and individual effort, this series stems from oh so
many conversations about the desire to create opportunities for
individuals and/or groups across diverse social movements to learn and
develop certain critical tools and training. These few workshops in
particular aim to provide a space where those who have gained specialized
skills and knowledge (sometimes through the privilege of formal training)
are able to share them with and within communities of resistance to
utilize as they see fit in their daily organizing efforts. These workshops
are of course in no way comprehensive; they are simply a start to the many
possibilities that could happen.
