The Best Place on Earth
photos & objects, 2005-06
Karen Ward is a historian, writer, some sort of artist, lesbian, who
lives with a mood disorder and a cat. She's very pleased to present a
show of photos, mostly of the neighbourhood on the east side of Vancouver
in which she lived during a period of recovery. These images are about
hope and despair, the stubborn persistence of humanity in an
indifferent-seeming concrete landscape. The show makes visible the lost,
erased, and painted-over voices pushed to the margins of invisibility by
mental illness, poverty, class, and colonialism.
In order to make everyone visible again, in order to see the shouts in
the streets that make history, you should come and see. So look away from
the mountains and have a psychogeographical tour of our terminal city.
It's as free as you are.
Opening Sunday June 1st @ 4 pm.
The show runs until the end of June at Taf's Cafe and Gallery located at
829 Granville Street, just south of Robson, conveniently equidistant to
the library and the Vancouver Art Gallery. Visit www.triumphstreet.ca for
more info and a preview.
