Bolivia
The Struggle for the New Constitution

On December 15, 2007, president Evo Morales delivered on one of the major promises he made to the Bolivian people as the new constitution of the country was finalized by the Constituent Assembly amidst fiery confrontations in the city of Sucre. While the new charter still has to be approved in a national referendum, it has been hailed as one of the most progressive in the world, particularly with regards to the rights of indigenous peoples. At the same time the right wing, backwards looking "opposition" has done everything it can to discredit the constitution and continues to intensify a campaign of disinformation with the complicity of the international corporate media. In opposition-controlled regions of Bolivia, groups of privileged land owners and wealthy elites that call themselves "Civic Committees" have been inciting sectarian conflict and fascist violence.

Progressive people all over the world are rising to defend the hard won gains of the Bolivian people against the tsunami of right wing propaganda. Join us on January 25 to learn more about the current situation from a pro-social perspective. The event will include two short films, a brief presentation on the situation in Bolivia, as well as an overview of the key elements of the new constitution.
