Kristian Williams in Vancouver to Speak against War and Olympics:

American author and outspoken anti-war activist, Kristian Williams, is in
town to speak about the military’s involvement in the 2010 Olympic winter
games. He will be joining a panel with local anti-war activists from
Stopwar.ca and No2010 Network on Thursday at 7pm at the SFU Harbor Center.

In a news report released last week, the Canadian Armed Forces confirmed
their half-billion dollar involvement and commitment of thousands of
troops for 2010. This has local anti-war and anti-Olympic activists
concerned.

As observed by Mr. Williams, ‘If you look at the role of Canadian forces
in Afghanistan you see two things. One is the counter-insurgency warfare
and the other is policing the war. Canada has invested a lot of money and
personnel into policing, prisons and bureaucracy.”

The armed forces have begun establishing themselves in Vancouver. Rear
Admiral Tyrone Pile told a Delta Chamber of Commerce audience that he
already has 25 people at his "joint task force games" headquarters in
Esquimalt, a number that will quadruple by this summer.

As part of a larger team headed by the RCMP, the armed forces will also be
working with CSIS and local police departments.

The centralized control over the security of the games and the absolute
authority it has is frightening. Rather then saving Canada from the
terrorists, the armed forces will be the armed enforcers of social
control.

According to kristian Williams, “counter insurgency is the model for
domestic as well as international policing operations.”

As the unwanted war in Iraq becomes more violent, America is increasing
relaying on repression to control its domestic population. The lessons
that this can teach Canadians is that the conditions of war abroad,
gravely affect the social conditions at home. This will no doubt play out
at the 2010 Olympic Games.
