All people require the basic necessities of life including land, housing,
food, water, and public services such as medical care, education and
sanitation. Within a world of vast inequality, millions are denied these
basic necessities. This situation is exacerbated by unjust trade, war and
occupation, pushing greater numbers of people into deepening poverty, forced
migration, and ill-health.
At the international level, unjust trade policies favour the rich and
exploit the resources and labour of the vast majority. Military occupation
and wars of aggression threaten the lives and security of millions of people
in countries such as Afghanistan, Palestine, Iraq and the Philippines. Here
in Canada, privatization, backed by big business, is eroding the public
services that poor people depend on to survive.
How can we achieve 'health for all' when the wealthiest nations and
businesses dominate the political, military and economic realms? Any vision
of achieving 'health for all' demands that we understand how these forces
act in our world and begin to take action for social justice.
Progressive health workers and communities are coming together to learn
about these issues and take collective action in tackling the roots of
ill-health.
We invite you to this public forum to join the Alliance for People's Health
and allies in uncovering the health impacts of unjust trade, war and
occupation. Learn about local and international campaigns and get involved
in the fight for social justice and health for all!
