 Re-Tracing Our Roots:
Forced Migration and the Chinese Community in Canada
*Join us for a sharing and discussion of the root causes of Chinese
migration to Canada *

 Saturday November 24th 2007

 11 am – 1 pm

At the Organizing Centre for Social and Economic Justice

672 E. Broadway (at fraser st.)

For over 200 years the Chinese community's history in Canada has been
marked by forced migration driven by economic survival and hope for a
life with dignity for future generations. From the first major wave of
migrant workers in the late 1800's, followed by the Head Tax and
anti-Asian immigration policies, to the current growing number of
undocumented and immigrant low wage workers, the history of
exploitation faced by our community continues today. Similar to other
communities of colour in Canada, our experiences of forced migration
have also been tied to racism, poverty, segregation and family
 separation.

What systemic forces led our ancestors and families to migrate to
Canada? What struggles did they face in Canada and what are some of
the struggles we face today? What role does the Canadian state play
in reinforcing poverty and racism in our community? How can we build
resistance and stand up for social and economic justice?

Join us as we come together as first, second or third generation
Chinese living in Canada to share our experiences of forced migration,
understand and draw lessons from our community's long history of
struggle for survival and to discuss how we can work together to fight
for the interests of our community.
