PRISON JUSTICE DAY AND PREVENTING PRISONER DEATHS
August 10th is a day set aside each year when prisoners and supporters
gather to honour the memory of the men and women who have died unnatural
deaths inside of Canadian prisons.
What started as a one time event behind the walls of one prison in 1975 has
become a international day of solidarity. On this day, prisoners across the
country and around the world fast, refuse to work, and remain in their
cells, while supporters organize community events to draw attention to the
conditions inside of prisons.

In June 2007, the Correctional Investigator released a detailed report
that documents how many of the deaths behind bars (from murder, suicide,
and neglect) can and should be prevented.

BUILD HEALTHY COMMUNITIES, NOT MORE JAILS!
In order to appear "tough-on-crime", federal politicians have introduced a
number of regressive government bills to amend the Criminal Code. The
proposed legislation signals a major shift in our justice system; moving
away from the principles of rehabilitation, restorative justice and
alternatives to incarceration to a U.S lock-em up and throw away the key
style of sentencing.
