Behind the slide of the U.S. dollar and economy:
Is the US. empire in decline?
Speaker: Ingo Schmidt, economist and political activist
Sunday, December 16, 3 pm
At Spartacus Books, 319 W. Hastings St. (2nd floor)
The U.S. dollar has lost value against every other major world currency in recent months. The U.S. housing market has dropped, one of several signals that the economy there is headed into recession. The cost of waging wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is becoming a larger and larger drag on the economy and causing sharp rises in the government debt.
What are the underlying causes of the growing economic instability in the U.S.? How will this affect its foreign policy, and how might U.S. workers be expected to defend themselves against mounting layoffs and other attacks on their social rights? Why is poverty on the rise in the midst of so much apparent wealth?
