Art Against Brutality!
September 16th
Oppenheimer Park
(Dunlevy & Cordova)
Noon-Dusk
Art Against Brutality is a daylong multi-media community celebration of
resistance, the resilience of the spirit and the healing power of art. The
event is organised by an informal grassroots collective, composed of
representatives from like-minded groups and individuals.
Our mandate is twofold: to testify to our common struggle and to educate
people to the many forms of violence including, violence against women,
children, racilized communitys, drug users and the poor, as well as the
degradation of the environment, the systematic violence of capitalism,
prison and the welfare system.
This year we will continue with the themes and mediums of last year. There
will be a labyrinth built throughout the park to display individual art; a
media room featuring locally made documentaries; a healing tent and
various interactive art opportunities including a graffiti wall, a
collective mural, chapbook, stencil and silkscreen making; and tables and
displays set up by individuals and community groups involved in struggle.
There will also be a main stage featuring indigenous hip-hop and blues
bands. Spoken word, free style, poetry rants and ravings!
