Monday March 6
SFU School of Communication, CounterCulture Series hosts a public lecture
by U. of Calgary Cinema Scholar Malek Khouri:
"New Arab Cinema and National Identity: Re-incorporating the Jewish into
Arab Identity"
Dr. Khouri discusses new themes and patterns in Arab cinema that allude to
the Arab Jewish community, its history and traditions and the major
upheavals that impacted it after the creation of the state of Israel. These
themes and patterns constitute budding components of a New Arab film
movement. The presentation discusses examples from several Arab films, and
surveys their social, political and cinematic significance, screening clips
from "Forget Baghdad", "Alexandria" "Why?", "Summer in la Goulette", "Gulf
War, What Next?", and "Salut Cousin".
Monday March 6 from 3:30 to 5 pm
SFU Harbour Centre - 515 West Hastings
Room 7000
(take the elevator located on the east side of the lobby up to the 7th floor)
Dr. Malek Khouri is an Assistant Professor of film in the Faculty of
