Emergency Rally to Save Hotel!

Wednesday July 26
556 Powell street
10:30am - till as long as it takes!

Residents and activists in the downtown eastside have called an emergency
rally to save the Powel Street hotel from being closed tomorrow morning.
The hotel is being threatened with closure by the Coastal Health Authority
that claims the conditions inside “are unfit even for dogs’. On the
contrary the hotel is in relative decent shape and serves as a home to
many whom would be homeless without it.

Currently community members are fixing up rooms in the hotel and
organizing the tenants. Earlier in the day a delegation of activists
representing the Save Low Income Housing Coalition forced a meeting with
the Coastal Health’s executive. The Coastal Health was informed that the
reasons they are giving to close the building are contrary to the reality
within the building. The meeting ended with the representative of the
Anti-Poverty Committee being forcible removed.

We call on all able people to please show their support tomorrow at the
hotel. We believe with a strong physical presence the eviction will be
withdrawn.

Our solidarity with the people of the DTES is supporting the struggles
against capitalism and colonisation across the province. We need your help
to stand united and fight back! Bring a sign. Bring your bike. Bring a
drum. Bring a puppet. Bring your child. Bring your resolve to not let the
Olympics destroy the eastside.
