*Do We Need an Alternative to the AFN?*
With featured speaker Taiaiake Alfred
Wednesday July 12th
12:30 PM outside of Canada Place
(Near Granville and Cordova)
On Wednesday, while the Assembly of First Nations holds its General
Assembly, Kanien'kehaka writer and scholar Taiaiake Alfred will be speaking
about the failure of the AFN to defend, advance, and truly represent the
interests of Indigenous people.
Taiaiake will also be taking this opportunity to talk about the Wasáse
Movement, and the need for indigenous people and peoples to build
alternatives to the Assembly of First Nations if we are to successfully
fight colonialism, and fight to win our homelands, governance, and dignity.
What is Wasáse?
"Wasáse is an intellectual and political movement whose ideology is rooted
in sacred wisdom. It is motivated and guided by indigenous spiritual and
ethical teachings, and dedicated to the transformation of indigenous people
in the midst of the severe decline of our nations and the crises threatening
our existence. It exists to enable indigenous people to live authentic, free
and healthy lives in our homelands.' – From the Wasáse Movement Statement of
Principles.
All those dedicated to fighting for indigenous pathways of action and
freedom are encouraged to attend.
