*Highway Update* *- Call to Action!*
/Your guide to activities and plans in opposition to the #1 Highway
expansion and doubling of the Port Mann Bridge./

Transportation Minister Kevin Falcon is expected to release his
Hwy1/Port Mann expansion plans on Tuesday. This is the report we've all
been waiting for - Falcon is finally laying out the details of his
ill-conceived plan! And - as expected - they're not consulting the
public in any meaningful way...just holding "open houses" to tell you
why you should think the plans are a good idea. If you've been
wondering what you can do to fight this highway expansion, read on!
Now's the time for action! These next 10-weeks-or-so are ripe with
opportunity to voice our opposition.

Please spread this through your networks. Here's how we're
reacting...and how you can help.

1* Monday morning (Jan 30): Installation of the "Kevin Falcon riding
backwards on a donkey...surrounded by shrubbery" effigy at the 1st
Avenue Interchange *and* release of our Freeway Fighters' Handbook. We
need six volunteers to help pull this off.

2* Tuesday at noon (Jan 31): Falcon is speaking downtown at the Hyatt as
part of the BC Chamber of Commerce Transportation Summit. This is when
he's expected to release his report on the Hwy1/Port Mann expansion, and
we want to give it a big Citizens Concerned with Highway Expansion
welcome! Come demonstrate at noon (the Hyatt is at 655 Burrard St.).

3* Public 'Open Houses' (note, they're not even calling them
consultation!) are taking place mid-February to April. Check back on
our website for details. And speaking of our website...if you have web
skills and want to contribute to the campaign...we could use your help!

Read on for the details...

Your feedback/comments/questions are always welcome. Feel free to
contact us at this address, or by phone at 604-708-0777.

Cheers,
CCHE

*1** Citizens Concerned with Highway Expansion to release /The Freeway
Fighters' Handbook /and unveil "Kevin Falcon riding backwards on a
donkey...surrounded by shrubbery"! Monday morning, January 30th.*
Monday morning we will gather a small group of concerned citizens at the
1st Avenue/Hwy 1 interchange to release /The Freeway Fighters' Handbook/
and unveil our papier mache effigy. We plan to do this during rush
hour, and could use a handfull of volunteers. We'll have all the gear
(including reflective vests for safety!) but are asking you to RSVP if
you're interested in taking part - to arrange a time and place for
meeting up. Give Dave a call at 604-722-4775 or send him a note at
astrochimp at telus.net <mailto:astrochimp at telus.net>.

*2** A big Citizens Concerned with Highway Expansion welcome to Kevin
Falcon's plans for Hwy1/Port Mann expansion! Hyatt Regency (655
Burrard) Tuesday, January 31st at noon.*
BC Transportation Minister Kevin Falcon is speaking to the BC Chamber of
Commerce Transportation Summit on Tuesday morning, January 31st, and it
is widely anticipated that he will be releasing his plans for the
Hwy1/Port Mann expansion. Various groups will be reacting, including
CCHE. We'll be there to handle media commentary, and would like to get
a good-sized demonstration together. Come by the Hyatt Regency (655
Burrard Street) on Tuesday January 31st from noon-1pm to take part. If
you haven't been able to make it out to an event so far, this is one you
don't want to miss!

*3** Gateway 'Open Houses' are taking place mid-February through April.
No public consultation here!*
Public 'Open Houses' are taking place mid-February to April. It can't
hurt to get out to these and voice your discontent! And, plans are in
the works for some 'alternate' consultations through other groups, so
we'll keep you informed of those. Check back on our website for details.

*/And speaking of our website/*...if you have web skills and want to
contribute to the campaign...we could use your help! We use an easy
share-ware template through the Vancouver Community Network, so it
doesn't take long to learn...we're just constantly spread a little thin
and aren't able to keep it as up-to-date as we would like.
