Counter Culture, SFU School of Communication presents

13 Women: Parables from Prison

An evening presentation and discussion with scholar and long-time
prisoners' rights activist Karlene Faith

Thursday, January 26 from 6-8 pm
Harbour Centre Campus, Room 2245
515 Hastings St., Vancouver

Karlene Faith's latest work draws together the remarkable stories of women
prisoners in their own words, spanning three decades and three countries:
Canada, the U.S. and Brazil.

In 2005, close to 200,000 women were being held in North American jails and
prisons. Globally, most women prisoners share a history of poverty, racism
and/or violence directed against them from a young age. But all kinds of
women go to prison, and the voices in this book belie any stereotype. Each
is a story of resilience, of facing the world bravely and learning the
lessons it teaches. Karlene Faith's insightful commentary raises
provocative questions about power, the meaning of justice, and the broad
social challenges that women face.

Free and open to the public
