JOB POSTING
Community Outreach Worker
Downtown Eastside Neighbourhood Helpers Project

*Applications due by August 15, 2006*

We require a part time community outreach worker to work in a cooperative work 
space with one other paid staff and a group of volunteers to strengthen social 
support networks among older low-income residents living in Single Room 
Occupancy Hotels in the Downtown Eastside.

Responsibilities:
* Outreach into residential hotels to contact seniors
* Organize and animate regular coffee drop-ins in hotels
* Recruit, train and support volunteers who are also area residents
* Organize community residents to become active on issues impacting their lives
* Provide appropriate referral services
* Identify seniors' needs and concerns in the Downtown Eastside area
* Create action plans to address the needs in partnership with other
organizations
* Write proposals, reports to funders, press releases, and other
community based communications

The candidate will have the ability to connect well with people, be
able to work with people of diverse backgrounds, have conflict
resolution skills, community organizing and education skills and is
willing to commit, for the long term, to this work and the community.

We are looking for someone who:

* Has an outgoing personality and is comfortable with meeting and
connecting with new people on an ongoing basis
* Has an understanding of the present day issues facing low-income
residents in the inner city
* Is well connected with other organizations
* Has experience or demonstrated community organizer skills
* Can work well in a team and with volunteers
* Is a good listener and has great communication skills
* Has very good computer and writing skills
* Has a degree, diploma, or certificate related to community
development and education
* Has the ability to speak another language an asset
* Will work 20-22 hours per week, schedule somewhat flexible
