The Simon Fraser Public Interest Group [SFPIRG] is hiring for 3 summer
student positions! These positions are pending funding from HRSDC, please
read on for a full description of the job duties and eligibility

Summer Student Positions: Pending Funding
SFPIRG is a student-directed social and environmental justice organization.
We work to dismantle racism, sexism, heterosexism and other forms of
discrimination and oppression. We are a collectively run organization that
works by consensus. We are looking for 3 students to fill our 3 available
summer positions for 6-16 weeks (depending on funding) starting in May 23,
2006. Applicants must be able to work up to 20 hours a week, during office
hours. The wage rate is $16 an hour. This position is funded by the Human
Resources and Social Development Canada (HRSDC). This funding stipulates
that students must be between 15-30 years of age and have been a full time
student in the spring and be returning as a full time student in the fall.
Unfortunately, international students do not qualify under this HRSDC
funding.

***COMMUNICATIONS COORDINATOR***
Duties and Responsibilities:
-Design outreach materials for the fall semester - posters, leaflets, ads
etc.
-Co-ordinate and design Alternative Guide to SFU and the SFPIRG annual report
-Assist the Antithesis Magazine collective with editing and layout
-Update and manage website
-Assist students with finding material in the resource library
-Answer the phones and perform reception-related duties
-Participate in ongoing projects and work with volunteers on communications
projects

Skills:
-Graphic design skills
-Knowledge of layout and design programs (photoshop, indesign etc)
-Friendly, approachable with excellent interpersonal skills
-Organised and resourceful
-Familiar with SFPIRG philosophies and commitment to the issues of social
and environmental justice
-Capacity to be self-directed and work in a collective structure using
consensus decision-making
-Familiarity with Windows-based computers
-Experience or ability to work with volunteers and groups from a diversity
of backgrounds

Duties and Responsibilities:
-work with the ARX Coordinator and ARX Working Group to implement the
Action Research Exchange (ARX) project – a research
initiative

to link
SFU student researchers on campus with community groups in the Lower
Mainland in need of research (www.sfpirg.ca/arx)
-coordinate outreach to existing and new community contacts to solicit and
facilitate research projects and partnerships (including presentations and
tabling at community events)
-help to design and implement a contacts database
-manage and maintain correspondence between ARX and community groups
(email, phone, mail)
-support the Working Group in reviewing and assessing incoming research
proposals (this includes liaising with community groups to enable them to
submit successful proposals)
-attend all ARX Working Group meetings and ARX events

Skills:
-good communication skills (approachable, responsive, clear)
-organised, resourceful, and self-initiated
-knowledge of the non-profit sector and progressive community groups in
Lower Mainland
-sensitive to and aware of social and political issues in the social
justice community
-experience and/or interest in community research and alternative research
methodologies
-capacity to be self-directed and work in a collective structure using
consensus decision-making
-windows-based knowledge and experience with Microsoft Access (database
software) an asset
-ability and willingness to work with volunteers and groups from a
diversity of backgrounds

-prepare a schedule for classroom speaking in the fall
-prepare and design outreach materials for classroom speaking and faculty
presentations
-attend all ARX Working Group meetings and ARX events

Skills:
-strong organizational skills
-resourceful, and self-initiated; able to work in a collective structure
using consensus
-good speaker with friendly, accessible manner
-knowledge of SFU student groups and experience networking with faculty
-experience and/or interest in community research and alternative research
methodologies
-windows-based knowledge and design/lay-out experience (to design outreach
materials)
-some volunteer coordination and event organizing experience
