SFU School of Communication CounterCulture presents
Racism, Revolts and the Intimate Architecture of Fortress Europe
La Raison du Plus Fort (Might is Right) - a documentary by Patric Jean
Produced two years before the French banlieux uprisings in the winter of
2005, this documentary paints a devastating picture of the structures of
exclusion underlying these widely mediatized events.
SFU Harbour Centre, (515 West Hastings St.)
7-9 pm, Room 1700
Description: Inexorably, the gap widens between the haves and the
have-nots, a drama played out in Europe by the architectural divide between
wealthy central neighbourhoods and the impoverished outer suburbs. The
filmmaker travels from Belgium to Amiens, Lyon and Marseille in France,
speaking with people living on the outskirts of big cities about their
daily lives and the discrimination they experience. The film's visual
language plays with the contrast between the drab isolation of the city
limits and the bustle and colour of the central core. An uncompromising,
militant look at the fabric of European cities today. (2003, 59 minutes)
