FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

New book by Montréal publisher, Cumulus Press, successfully argues for the
reclamation of media and public spaces from the private domain. “Autonomous
Media” is a street-wise Canadian account of media practices that subvert the
social order of information flow. It amplifies the voices of people and groups
that normally do not have access to the media and encourages audiences to
participate directly in the production of media content. Naomi Klein suggests
that autonomous media practitioners “liberate ‘meaning-making’ from PR
specialists and corporate board rooms [and] crack open spaces in which social
movements can grow and genuine democracy can flourish.”

This is the first and only Canadian book examining one of the most important
media/journalism phenomena of the late 20th and early 21st centuries:
autonomous media. According to John Downing, editors Langlois and Dubois “have
captured a number of the most intense communication developments and debates
within the current global social justice movements. Like the most promising
projects at the present time, they constantly combine local and global issues:
low power radio, open publishing, blogging, culture-jamming and more. They
provide solid fuel for the fire that continues to burn in Québec, in Canada,
and across the planet.”
