A Very British Coup
(Britain, 1988, 153 minutes, discussion to follow)
This political conspiracy thriller, adapted from M.P. Chris Mullin's
novel, is centred on Harry Perkins, a third-generation socialist who is
elected Prime Minister of Great Britain. Perkins sends shockwaves
through the government, both at home and abroad, by working for nuclear
disarmament, open government, and other radical policy changes. US
interests combine with the British ruling class "old boys network" to
try and defeat Perkins with behind-the-scenes tools like spies,
tabloids, and tapes, to accomplish a very British coup. He is soon
fighting to stay in power against the combined might of the press, the
Civil Service and the Americans.
Sponsored by Young Communist League (YCL), Centre for Socialist
Education, Vancouver East Club (Communist Party of Canada). Donations
welcome, refreshments will be available, call 255-2041.
