Emma Goldman and Immigrant Anarchist Movements

Presentation by Barry Pateman, associate editor of the Emma Goldman Papers at the University of California in Berkeley

5:00 pm, Saturday, June 11, 2005
975 Vernon Drive - #260, Vancouver
a block southwest of the intersection at Clark Drive and Venables

Emma Goldman was a notorious anarchist and Jewish-Russian immigrant who was deported from the United States for her opposition to World War I and later took part in the Russian and Spanish revolutions. In 1908, Winnipeg politicians and business men tried to prevent Emma Goldman from speaking in the city, for fear that she would incite the large local population of Jewish and Eastern European immigrants to rebellion. This fear partly contributed to the Canadian government's 1910 ammendment to the Immigration Act, which allowed for the exclusion and deportation of immigrants professing anarchist beliefs.

On Saturday, June 11, Barry Pateman, associate editor of the Emma Goldman Papers at the University of California in Berkeley, will talk about Emma Goldman's connection to the Mexican and Italian anarchist immigrant movements of the time, including anarchist martyrs Ricardo Flores Magón and Sacco and Vanzetti, who were murdered by the US government.

All over the world anarchists continue the struggle against immigration control, borders and detention centres, as part of the wider struggle against capitalism and all forms of government. What can we learn from the history of the anarchist movement and how can we use that knowledge in the present-day conflict?

Barry Pateman will also be speaking at Simon Fraser University Harbour Centre over the weekend as part of the Industrial Workers of the World - The First 100 Years Conference.
