Fight the Safe Street Act!
Monday January 31
Robson and Hamilton
(South-East corner of Library square)
12-noon
The rich bastards have gotten what they have been begging for, the Safe
Street Act (SSA) with all its desired oppressive ingredients. After
consulting with the Business Improvement Association (the scum bags who
where the most aggressive in seeing this Act through) the Attorney General
passed the enforcement components of the Act.
Poor people will be fined for panhandling and squeegee work. Poor people
who continue to be poor and are unable to pay their fines will be thrown
in jail. Warehousing homeless people in jails is the Liberals sick idea of
social housing.
The Anti-Poverty Committee is not astonished or surprised by the
repressive tactics taken by this government. We knew the Act would be
passed because the vast majority of the people who opposed the Act refused
to do any thing against it. Now that it is law we call on all persons and
groups who signed petitions and passed motions against it to take to the
sidewalks and challenge the SSA physically.
We will undertake a campaign of aggressive panhandling to make enforcement
unenforceable, much as it is now in Ontario. We will legally challenge
every ticket handed out by the cops and we will continue mobilising people
to destroy this government and their business lackeys.
Join us this Monday at high-noon out front of Lorne Mayencourt's office
located at the corner of Hamilton and Robson (South-East corner of Library
square). We will proceed from there to the financial district where we
will as a group aggressively panhandle every yuppie in front of any bank
machine and bus stop, or anywhere poor people are not allowed to go; and
we dare the cops to stop and ticket us!
