Roads are for hockey

It is time to take back our community streets! Join members of the
community for a road hockey game on Commercial Drive on February 13 at
1pm.
--

Do you feel like your neighbourhood is being taken over by cars? Every
year we see more cars on our streets and as a result we experience a
decline in the quality of life.

Pollution
Cars emit harmful pollutants including Nitrogen Oxides, Carbon Monoxide,
Particulate matter and others which cause a variety of health effects from
cancer to lung disease. It is estimated that the health care costs of air
pollution in the Lower Mainland could cost as much as $1000 per person
per year. 75% of the GVRD's air pollution comes from cars.

Decline of Community
Car congestion, noise and aggressive driving make our streets unpleasant
and unhealthy places to be. Neighbourhood streets are for a variety of uses
especially social interaction but car drivers have taken priority. Vancouver
has 50 or more pedestrian hits per month and the Vancouver Police Dept.
still does not have a fully staffed traffic section. When was the last time
you
felt safe crossing the street?

Climate Change and Kyoto Protocol
The Kyoto Protocol comes into force on February 16. There is much that
Canada and other nations must do to effectively tackle climate change such
as curbing vehicle use- in BC vehicle emissions are the largest single
source of greenhouse gases.

community for a road hockey game on Commercial Drive on February 13 at
1pm and learn more about the issues and find other ways to get involved.
