Hearts Cracked Open + Tantra Workshop

Fri Aug 5, 2005, 7:00 pm @ Cinemark Tinseltown

Director in attendance

Intimacy. Ecstasy. Bliss. Lesbian sex and spiritual connection: can one
really enhance the other? Hearts Cracked Open answers with a resounding
 “yes”, as it explores Tantra.

For thousands of years heterosexual couples have enjoyed the benefits of the
ancient practice but until very recently, there has been no information
about this spiritual/sexual path specific to lesbian and bisexual women.
This provocative film cracks open the heart to a wider range of emotions and
sensations as women reclaim the fullness of their beings.

Hippies, hipsters, young and old, Buddhists and bar dykes, there is
something for everyone in Hearts Cracked Open as it explores both the
healing and pleasure of sexuality.

Workshop to follow with sexperts:

Betsy Kalin, MFA, is a writer, director, videographer and editor. Her films
have screened at festivals world-wide.

Sheila Malone is an artist and educator from the San Francisco Bay area. Her
art explores sexuality, gender, queer theory and technology. She is
currently working on the 3Djuna Project2 which explores the transgendered
body.

Elaine Miller is a friendly neighbourhood femme leather dyke who does a
great deal of queer, kinky and literary things for a living.

Floored by Love

 Fri Aug 12, 2005, 9:30 pm @ Pacific Cinematheque
Directors in attendance

Floored by Love

This locally filmed family comedy delivers two parallel storylines as a
Chinese-Japanese lesbian couple contemplates marriage and a Jewish family
tries to hold on to the affection of their newly out gay son.

Co-written by Vancouverites Desiree Lim and Karen X. Tulchinsky, Floored by
Love delivers a tender exploration of the layers of love between life
partners, children and parents to arrive at the fact that, despite their
differences, their lives are not so far apart.

A heartwarming slice of life, Floored by Love is about finding the courage
to be who you really are.

Not Straight Forward

Sat Aug 13, 2005, 7:00 pm @ Cinemark Tinseltown

Director in attendance, plus dates!

Party to follow at Lick Club. VIP entrance with Not Straight Forward ticket
stub.

Not Straight Forward

It’s “Blind Date” meets “The L Word”. Not Straight Forward chronicles the
romantic adventures of the irrepressible Tan, a high energy, 24-year-old
self proclaimed butch virgin, as she turns on the charm and goes on ten
dates with ten different women.

A commitment-phobe, Gemini and extrovert, Tan takes to the beaches, the ball
fields and gay bingo halls on a dating marathon that may just lead her to
Ms. Right. Her prospects run the gamut, from a closeted military woman to a
future sex educator who thankfully sets Tan straight on some important
equipment and anatomy basics. When sparks fly with at least one woman, will
Tan abandon her serial-dating ways to risk something more, or at least, a
second date?

Interspersed with commentary on queer issues, Not Straight Forward offers
anentertaining, upbeat look at the lesbian dating scene and the unavoidable
emotional twists that go with it.

seems as she hilariously navigates the world of lesbian dating.

Seeing Colour Queerly: A Community Forum

showtime: 2005-08-13 2:00 pm @ Cinemark Tinseltown

How have we learned to view race on screen? How are sexed bodies racialized
and racialized bodies sexed? How does this play out in queer media? And how
might we unlearn our gaze to see and think race differently... queerly?

Panelists will explore these questions by discussing their experience as
artist, writer, curator, teacher and spectator. The forum will be
accompanied by short film and video clips, with an emphasis on locally
produced work.Panelists:

Helen Hok-Sze Leung teaches at Simon Fraser University and is completing a
book on queer culture in Hong Kong.

Bo Myers is currently working on an experimental short with initial support
from the NFB entitled Whiplash Diaries. She is also completing a dance piece
for Bravo TV entitled Blossom, and is in development on a few upcoming
commissions: one with a vocalist and another with a composer.

Debora O is a mixed race queer born in Lisbon. An educator, writer and
sometimes image-maker, she is currently obsessed with homoerotic, pre-1960s
novels written by mixed folk. Her first short video Blood won the 2003 Gerry
Brunet Memorial Award. She has a master’s degree in postcolonial literature
and theory.
