*What is the Western Shoshone Defense Project?*
The Western Shoshone Defense Project's (WSDP) mission is to affirm Newe
(Western Shoshone) jurisdiction over Newe Sogobia (Western Shoshone
homelands in Nevada). The W.S.D.P. was established in 1991 by the Western
Shoshone National Council to provide support to Mary and Carrie Dann,
Western Shoshone grandmothers who were facing the confiscation of the
livestock which they graze on Western Shoshone lands.
Since then, the Western Shoshone Defense Project has been involved with
many other struggles against the continued theft of Western Shoshone land
and resources, including a campaign against the 'Western Shoshone
Distribution Bill.' Under this bill, which was ratified by George W. Bush in
July 2004, Western Shoshone claims to 24 million acres of their traditional
territory were subsumed in exchange for a forced payment of 15 cents per
acre, a payment which was refused by the majority of Western Shoshone
people.
Currently the major campaign of the Western Shoshone Defense Project is
against the expansion of the Cortez Gold Mines, located on traditional
Western Shoshone Territory. The Cortez Gold Mines expansion is a joint
venture involving Placer Dome, a Canadian multi-national corporation, and
involves the theft of Western Shoshone resources.
Carrie Dann's visit to Vancouver is an important occasion to share the
lessons, persistence and victories of the fifteen year campaign of the WSPD
within the hundreds of years old struggle of Indigenous nations against
American and Canadian colonialism. Carrie Dann's experience as a veteran
Indigenous sovereignty fighter and leader is significant for all people
opposed to colonialist and imperialist war and occupation from Newe Sogobia
to Skwelkwek'welt to Palestine and Iraq.
