           Demonstration against the Safe Street Act!

                     Saturday October 2nd
           Pacific Center Mall (corner of Georgia and Howe)
                            6pm

        No to Safe Streets Act!! No to social cleansing!!

This coming Saturday, the Anti-Poverty Committee will be demonstrating
against the proposed Safe Street Act (SSA). The demonstration will take
place at the Pacific Center Mall where the Businesses Improvement
Association (BIA) will attempt to host a reception as part of an
annual International Downtown Association conference.

The BIA is a lobby group who has been aggressively begging the BC Liberals
to adopt the Safe Streets Act as a measure to further persecute poor
people.  The act would criminalize most street level work such as
squeegeeing windshields and selling papers as well as panhandling.  The
BIA and local Liberals claim the SSA will only be directed against
“aggressive beggars” but given the climate of poor bashing in this
province there is no doubt all poor people struggling through their
day-to-day survival will become targets.

The APC has been fighting the BIA tooth and nail for years throughout all
their acts of social cleansing. We are calling on all supporters and
persons concerned with the increasing attacks on poor working people. We
will have speakers ranging from lawyers to grass root activists speaking
out against the war on the poor. Your participation will expose the lies
of the Liberals who claim the people of BC are in favor of the Safe Street
Act and show the people most vulnerable to these attacks that through acts
of solidarity we will defend each other!

Please bring signs and banners and your spirit that we will need to defeat
this government!
