Dreams of the Night Cleaners
by Leila Sujir 47 mins

This visually stunning “docu-fiction” takes us on a complex voyage through
history and memory. Newspaper clippings, computer screens, billboards, and
the reflective windows of bank buildings whisper fragments of racism and
greed. An archivist, an airline worker, and a night cleaner overcome their
mutual suspicions and share their stories: of destroyed homelands, migration
and struggle. Original mixes of world music and playful video effects create
a mythic landscape of healing for the characters, for our cultural stories,
and for ourselves. A thought provoking video that brings Canadian
immigration history to life, co-produced with the Banff Centre and the
National Film Board.

Mediatosis
by MYCA project 15 mins.

This documentary in progress explores themes of youth and media
representation, mixing mockumentary with stories of people who, in one way
or another, contribute to challenging stereotypes of young people in Canada.
This video was conceived, directed, shot and edited by the MYCA which is
formed by graduate facilitators of Immigrant Services Society’s youth peer
support program. This video project emerged as a response to unsatisfactory
media representation of some of our members, as a way to take responsibility
and ownership of our portrayal. It puts immigrant, refugee and First Nations
youth in the highly competitive yet unrepresentative position of media
makers. MYCA members will be in attendance of the event and we look forward
to your critical feedback.
