Immediate Release: Oct. 18, 2004

All Aboard the Arbutus Corridor: Design Contest.

SPEC is holding a contest for the best ideas, visions and designs for the
future of the Arbutus Corridor.

"This contest is for you," said SPEC Director Carole Christopher, "Whether
you're a member of the general public, a student, or a planning
professional. If you're interested in the future of the Arbutus Corridor,
we want your ideas. There is a place for your entry, whether you write it
on the back of an envelope or make a detailed presentation."

Entries can focus on a block, a neighbourhood, a heritage building, or the
whole 11-km Corridor. All ideas are welcome, from written paragraphs,
sketches and drawings to full computerized concepts. Creativity,
sustainability, imagination and feasibility will be considered.

This intact, historic rail corridor is a one of a kind resource that runs
parallel to Arbutus St. from False Creek to Marpole and the Fraser River.
With the discontinuation of rail service in 2001, Vancouverites now have a
unique opportunity to create a vision for the future.

A panel including New City Institute director Don Alexander, former
Vancouver Councillor Alan Herbert, former VanCity director Greg McDade,
photo-based artist Penny Parry and BEST (Better Environmentally Sound
Transportation) executive director Marion Town, will determine the winners.

Prizes include: Weekend at a Hornby Island waterfront retreat, $500 cash
award and other great prizes.

Deadline for entries is February 01, 2005.

All Aboard the Arbutus Corridor Design Contest is supported by: Mountain
Equipment Co-Op, Choices, Kerrisdale Lumber, Ace Cycle Shop, Jack Bell
Rideshare, Hills of Kerrisdale, Putting Pedestrians First, Ridge Theatre,
BEST, Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition, Architectural Institute of BC,
Kerrisdale Heating, Cypress and Maple Community Gardens, and SmartGrowth BC.
